Welsh Builders Book

Post by daggers »

We have had threads here about the many Welsh housebuilders who created much of Liverpool. I know there is a copy of a small book about them at the Record Office, but does any member of the forum own a copy?
I am interested in knowing more about W.J. Williams who lived in Mossley Hill around 1930 and probably built many of the semi-detached houses in the area.

Is it called, "Frank Green: Liverpool and the Welsh builders"? At the moment there are two copies in the Record Office book archive, two in Central Library that can be borrowed and one copy at each of the following libraries: Childwall, Sefton Park and Toxteth. I thought it might have been available to read as an e-book via the library but unfortunately it's not available.

I had no idea Frank Green would be connected to a multi lingual book.... unless I and google are mixing them up, I only knew about his pictures, sorry I don't have a copy but if you were to get enough use out of it then it's available on Amazon from £5.03 but I believe that wouldn't include postage.

I wondered if News from Nowhere had one, they do but full price at £10.00.

If you are in town any time, check out that bookshop in St John's Precinct, next to the entrance by the Royal Court, they seem to have a lot of Liverpool ones.

No, the one I meant is older than Frank Green's, probably 1930s.
I'm sure it was spelled out in an old thread here and will have a search. Back soon.

I'm back.
Found the old thread, 2010. The title is 'The Welsh Builder on Merseyside' and Jan44 had a copy. She has not been on the forum for some months.
It would be good if the LRO had their copy digitised! I'm sure there would be plenty of interest, now people are looking into house history as well as families.

EDIT TO ADD:
The full title is 'The Welsh Builder on Merseyside: their annals and lives', by J.R. Jones. There are copies for sale on Abebooks, the lowest at £48.75, others at £83.29 and £120.00!!!

Hmmm

Can this wait until after Christmas Daggers or are you in a hurry? Not sure I'm well enough to get to the RO at the moment.

I have looked at the book at LRO. Although the 'Williams' I was interested in had only three lines about his business, there is a great deal of information about many others, including their home origin in Wales, their activities in Liverpool and in many cases their chapel affiliation. Well worth a look if you have a Welsh builder in your tree.
Most of the book is a list of names and of course has many many Evans, Jones, Roberts, Williams etc.
