Walter or William?

In the 1861 census RG9/2654 for 4 Hornby Street 35 Court, Liverpool I've got two different transcriptions from FMP and The Genealogist.

In the family of John Pritchard there is a grandson. TG have his name as Walter, FMP have it as Will. I'm wondering if this is another illegitimate offspring of Martha's :? though I can't find a Walter of the right age in the birth indexes so am thinking FMP must be correct or am I missing something here?

Also FMP have the address as 35 Court, 4, Albert Place, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

I have clipped it but sorry I don't know how to insert images on here......

Yes I too had the Albert Place address on my records (uncorrected for years) because of the FMP transcription until the other day when I realised it was wrong when you posted about Court 35 House 4 in Hornby Street Liverpool. I now have an Ancestry subscription I haven't subscribed to FMP for a number of years. Ancestry have the name as Will Prichard. There was a William Pritchard born in Q4 1860 in Liverpool, Vol: 8b Page: 64. This appears to be the baptism:-

Name: William Pritchard
Baptism Date: 7 Oct 1860
Parish: Liverpool, St Mark CE
Father's name: William Pritchard
Occupation: Shipwright
Mother's name: Elizabeth Pritchard
Address: 74 Rathbone Street

Thank you Blue so hopefully this Elizabeth is his mother not my Martha

Is this record from Ancestry or the Lancs OPC?

I only joined Anc 2 days ago and I'm finding myself a bit lost as it seems to throw out millions of records. I remember thinking that when Mary posted those RC baptisms, as in how did she find them so quickly?

I am just using the general search page but am thinking I need to be more record specific. How do you all do this please?

The image is on Ancestry for that baptism. I go via Search then Card Catalogue then use search word Liverpool this provides various Liverpool results including CE and RC records to search.

I tend never to use the main search, do as Blue suggests, for any database not on your front page, use the Card Catalogue. Putting Liverpool or Lancashire in the "keyword" box (never use the Title box, it doesn't seem to work) give you a list of all the databases Ancestry holds for Liverpool - plus a couple that might be Liverpool USA. But then you can choose which database you want to search.

If checking RC records don't forget that the priest would have latinicised the first names so it's often best to just put a surname and narrow your search by date.

If you find names you aren't sure of ask - remember they aren't all what they sound like - Jacobi is James and Gulielmus is William etc.

Why can't they be just in plain English as we don't live in Italy

Thanks Bertie, I knew I should have paid more attention in those Latin classes at school. :|

So back to this one. I cannot find a William Pritchard senior in any census of mine nor can I tie it in with my family. Any suggestions welcomed please.

You can see why it's been transcribed as Walt, beneath it there is a Willm

Yes Mary this is the grandchild showing on the census whose parents I am trying to establish. Blue thought it was William Pritchard as above but I cannot link this man to my family.

So back to this. Martha had a son John, who is my g.grandfather. I have never been able to find his birth certificate from many years ago when I wrote to Liverpool Register office asking for a John Pritchard with a mother Martha, they always returned my money and I *think* I exhausted all avenues.

Just a few weeks ago on FMP I found a William John Pritchard born 1860 no maiden name for the mother just a line - 8b 92. As I cannot tie this William on the 1861 census in with anyone else wondered if this was my John and he dropped the first name. The birth is registered in the 1st Q so would make him too old for the census but I was curious to see the BC for elimination purposes p.

I went to the GRO index and it's not there, I logged it as an error and have had to wait for a result with the Christmas and New Year holidays. Today the answer says their index is correct 😣.

What am I missing here?

Well I don't find it either!! Tried similar sounding, put in the very least but all I get is the other William in the Liverpool District in that quarter. I've even tried with the female option. Give them a phone call and ask, give the reason that you can't order a .pdf file unless you can find it on the page to order it.

From FreeBMD Births Mar 1860 - William John Pritchard Liverpool 8b 92 and this reference is confirmed on the original scan.

This is the GRO Reference:-

PRITCHARD, WILLIAM JOHN (NO MMN)
GRO Reference: 1858 S Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 95

Clearly, there is an error somewhere with referencing.

More possibles:-
PRITCHARD, WILLIAM JOHN ROBERTS
GRO Reference: 1859 S Quarter in WEST DERBY AND TOXTETH PARK Volume 08B Page 351

PRITCHARD, WILLIAM JOHN JONES
GRO Reference: 1862 D Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 38

GRO Death Reference:-

PRITCHARD, WILLIAM JOHN 0
GRO Reference: 1858 S Quarter in LIVERPOOL Volume 08B Page 110

Looks like you can rule this one out.

Thank you Mary and Louis.

I tried phoning but it was hopeless as none of the buttons I was supposed to press gave me the option I was looking for. I did, however, fill out an online contact form.

If that fails I will buy the BC from Liverpool as now I am extra curious.
