IGI how complete are the records?

Hello, I have recently found a person who has hooked up to the IGI (LDS) records as gospel re marriage and baptism records.

But as far as I know (I could be wrong?? :) ) they are not 100% complete for every parish and church in the UK for every year???

So say for instance you only found one Fred and Mary Bloggs in say a big city like London at St Swithins church married at the appropriate time you can't take it as gospel that these are "your" ancestors. Right or wrong?

Do you mean someone with a tree you've seen is basing all or some of their information on Family Search transcripts of records? I tend to use various sites together as there's no one resource that can be trusted to give a choice of every possible baptism, marriage or burial record for my search information. Family Search is not complete neither is Ancestry, nor Lancs OPC. I'd rather not add people to my tree if there's any doubt about them being right. There's also differences in transcription to consider on various sites that will affect search results. Transcripts are always easier to collect than parish record images/civil record images but fortunately more and more images are becoming available now on Ancestry, FMP, Family Search and National Library of Ireland so we will have a better chance at correctly identifying our ancestors.

Yes Blue, it is on somebody's tree, a transcript from the IGI.

But don't forget a major rule of our research - ALWAYS check the original. By accepting a transcript done by somebody else you are accepting their idea of what has been written and you may know better ie you may actually know when you see it that it isn't written Fred and Mary but perhaps Fred and Marg.

Oh for sure MaryA, I am very cynical of people just tagging their lot to the IGI without further research. The one I am looking at is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole..........
