St. Margaret's (Princes Rd) - Graveyard?

My great grandfather (Thomas Stott 1843-1908) lived all his life in Toxteth Park. I can not find any burial records, but he was an active member of the C of E church, St. Margaret of Antioch on Princes Road in the late 1800's. I think he may be buried in the churchyard there. Can ayone tell me if is still a churchyard with monuments there now? I am planning to visit Liverpool in late august, and would like to know in advance. Many thanks if you can help.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

This is a lovely church and is usually open to view it during Heritage week but I don't believe there is a graveyard, you can see it on googlemaps https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.39493 ... 312!8i6656

As it is an RC Church I wondered if perhaps he would have been buried in one of the RC cemeteries, although there isn't an entry for him for Ford, have you also checked Yew Tree?

Your enquiries would be better directed to the Liverpool Record Office https://liverpool.gov.uk/libraries/arch ... y-history/ but I'm not seeing a lot of entries for the Parish Registers for this church, I wonder if the registers are still at the church?

I can have a look in the indexes tomorrow to see what dates any burials may cover and whether he is buried in Yew Tree and whether there are any other suggestions I can make.

Please confirm if this is the entry for his death and if you have the certificate what is the exact date?

Sorry to disagree, Mary, but St Margaret's in Prince's Road IS CofE! It had a history of troubles with its 'Romish' practices many years ago.

Oops!! well I read it on one of the sites I googled, so they have it wrong too - unless I was looking at the wrong St Margaret's.

I notice that there is a Facebook Group for this church so I would suspect its members, particularly the Admin for the site, would be more knowledgeable about where the registers might be held and whether there are any graves still existing.

Thank you, Mary, and to all others who replied to my query. The DOD of Thomas STOTT was indeed 29 Sept 1908. I have searched the Ancestry website, Genes Reunited, the Toxteth and St. James Cemetery database and have found nothing. I will try to contact the St. Margaret's Church through the facebook page.

I have two other questions: What newspaper publication would have carried a death notice/obituary for Thomas in 1908, and where in Liverpool can microfilmed copies of the newspaper be viewed?

Thanks again

I have found that for the early part of the 20th century, the Daily Post is the best for death notices. Newspapers are held at the Liverpool Record Office on microfilm.

Sorry to post a negative response but I did a couple of look ups this morning and didn't find an obituary in either the Post & Mercury or in the Liverpool Echo, which would be the most likely newspapers at that time.

Nor are there any burials in the Parish Registers for St Margaret of Antioch, presumably this means that there isn't a graveyard at the church, but I did expect a Register of funerals at the church. So again, I can only suggest that you contact the church to ask the question.
