Hi, I have come across an Elias Croft, butcher of Bachelor/Batchelor Street/Lane/Wient and I was wondering if anybody has this street on an old map.

The variety of names of the street has all come from the various baptisms of his children between 1767 and 1780 so obviously we are not talking recently

If it's any help he appears to have died at Kay Street in 1803.

Key/Kay Street was on the north side of Tithebarn Street. Bachelor Street appears to have been across the street on the south side of Tithebarn Street between Tithebarn Street and Dale Street. I'm struggling to find a decent map of it I only have this one showing part of it in the bottom right hand corner:-

Thanks Blue, I suspected you might have had something in the way of a map of the right era. That is good enough for my use, I just had no idea where in Liverpool it was. I also notice Edmund Street is close by too, that featured in all of his sons childrens baptisms.

PS Can you imagine what they would have seen living there? I saw a talk once about the original seven streets and when the railways first opened, Exchange Station, and the line coming through from Southport. It would have been an exciting time of development.

I remember it well, although not quite like the 1850 picture

There is some description of Tithebarn Street Station in 'King Cotton', a novel by Thomas Armstrong. There is also plenty of Liverpool action, particularly relating to the cotton trade here.

The Cotton Exchange was built after the date of Blue's map, opening in 1906. It would take the space shown in the bottom left corner.

Blue, do you have searchable street lists? I'm working my way through some of the old directories for this family and have found a James Croft, also a butcher from about 1767 in Lumber Street - again not one I've heard of, and of course I'm wondering if it's in the same area? particularly since James is a name I haven't come across in my researches - yet!

Lumber Street was by the old St Mary's in Edmund Street.

Aaah, got to be related then somehow, the location is all in the same place. Thank you very much.

It doesn't seem to be named on that map I posted but it was right by the old site of St Mary's RC in Edmund Street.

This 1890s map shows the location of Lumber Street. The old St Mary's RC site is now part of Bixteth Street and the church has been rebuilt on the other side of the station:-
