Trying to tie up a few loose ends on some of my families and am looking for someone on the 1861 & 1871 census.

Charles Archibald Irwin (son of Archibald & Margaret) was born on 10th June 1849 and baptised on 22nd June 1849 at St. Peter’s, Church Street. He was a venetian blind maker by trade.

1851 Census: 2 Smith Street, Kirkdale (Piece: 2190, Folio: 369, Page: 47)

He is not listed with his family on the 1861 census at 122 Gordon Street, Everton (Piece: 2717, Folio: 117, Page: 42)

He married Rosena Lilly on 29th August 1870 at St. John’s, Liverpool. His address, 23 St. George’s Street, is the home of his brother, George Washington Irwin (my 2x great-grandfather). He is not with them on the 1871 census: (Piece: 3816, Folio: 67, Page: 25)

They had a child, Harriet Lilly Irwin, born in 1875 in Birkenhead.

By 1881, he is in Radford, Nottingham (Piece: 3342, Folio: 14, Page: 21) where he later got into trouble for keeping a disorderly house!

In 1891, he’s in Cardiff (Piece: 4398, Folio: 20, Page: 32). He’s still in Cardiff in 1901 (Piece: 4984, Folio: 210, Page: 55). He died in Bridgend in 1903.

Can anyone succeed where I have failed in finding him in 1861 or 1871?

Seems strange that he isn't with family at only 11 years old in 1861, have you found any grandparents that he might be with? Alternatively I would consider checking the Industrial Schools Registers at the RO.

Charles Iwin Nephew Unmarried Male 12 1849 ... Liverpool, Lancashire, England

not too convinced it's Iwin/Irwin.. could be Quin?

I've struggled to locate grandparents. The paternal grandparents were Archibald Irwin & Nancy Fearenside. Archibald died in 1843 and it looks as though Nancy died before him. (I have no concrete proof of this, however).

The maternal grandparents were William & Ann Doyle. Their daughter, Margaret, was born in 1814 in Bootle but baptised in 1823 at St. John's Church. There are potential burials of a William & Ann Doyle at St. John's but I cannot confirm that they are the right people. If they are the correct ones then, they too, died before Charles Archibald was born.

The industrial school idea is a good one. I'll have a look when I'm next at the Record Office.

Thanks! I agree that it might be Quin. None of the names of that family are familiar, although I know very little about his mother's family.
