To do that you need a name, age and approximate date of death [year and month].
Not all marine deaths are listed but go to Findmypast and under 'Search records' select 'Education & Work'. After entering the name, YoB, YoD etc details you have, select 'Merchant Navy & Maritime' from Record Collection. Then select 'Merchant Navy Seamen' from Record Set.
If you don't get a good match remove the 'Merchant Navy Seamen' filter and try again.
Good luck

You can buy credits on FMP but for doing what could be an extensive browse it might turn out expensive. Post all the info you have on that MN man and a quick peek will tell you if buying credits would be the thing to do.

FMP is free in all Liverpool libraries and probably available in some libraries outside the Liverpool area.

Didn't find an Alexander who might be yours but I haven't found a merchantman named Basilisk either. But there were several vessels named HMS Basilisk in the RN. Your Alexander may have been in the Royal Navy which would turn the search to a different direction.

Thanks for that Dickiesam. That would account for him being in Portsmouth in 1861. I think I was a bit confused about merchant and royal navy. Most of my family were in Merchant Navy so I do have an excuse
Thanks also for info on Basilisk-- very interesting. It looks like it should be a sailing ship (a sloop), but it was fitted with paddles and a steam engine.

There are a lot of mentions of the Basilisk in the newspapers but not found any including Alexander Mitchell, it would be a good place for you to browse in more depth.

His name might have been slightly different, either a diminutive like Alex or Sandy for instance

The NA have two records for an Alexander Mitchell RN, bn Liverpool, but the given DoBs are not a match. The first one looks interesting and worth a look because of the date he volunteered... 25 Aug 1860. Both are available for download.

For the crew this is the birth...
Births Jun 1840: Mitchell, Alexander Edmond - Prescot 20 718
Do we understand he never married and what is the source of the lore that he died abt 1874 while on HMS Basilisk?

I have broken the forbidden rule and taken someone else's info as true.
I have Alexander Edmund (Edmond) on the 41 and 51 census, with his family , South Hill Toxteth and Ashton St Liverpool. I am certain of these as they are with his mother, Esther , a widow, and his siblings . All correct. Mother dead before 1861 census , having remarried Thomas Barton Eaves.
I can't find his siblings or him with certainty in the 61 census. It is possible they all went to sea. Alexander's brother William is my G Grandfather and on his marriage certificate it says he is a mariner.
From anx may have been on Pacific and city of Baltimore, but again I can't be certain. The number for these William Mitchells are different. Did it change if they changed ship?
Oh dear I'm sorry to lump all this on you.
