I have found a death for a Charles Welson for the 23rd Dec. 1906 at Ford Cemetry in Ancestry. However on the Ford burial it states Wilson and there was no address.

I cannot find a death in the index's for the above in Liverpool. There is a couple that might link up with the time frame in other parts of the country. He was a seaman, so you think he might have died elsewhere? was it likely that he might have been returned to be buried in Liverpool. What happened when seamen died away from home?

Good to see you back on the boards.

Perhaps one of the crew will have a better answer about what would have happened if he had died at sea, I think there is a specific index for these entries.

How old would your Charles have been?

If he died outside British territorial waters and on a voyage to a port outside the UK it is likely he would have been buried at sea or, if close, at the next port-of-call.

His death could be recorded in the Consulate Death Index, the GRO Marine Deaths Index or in the Board of Trade Mercantile Marine records and, with luck, together with cause of death in the latter. Do you have any MN records for him? As MaryA asked, what was his year [and place] of birth?

If he died elsewhere in the UK the death should have been registered at the nearest Register Office.

He was born in Liverpool in 1878. I have all the other information about him, but I cannot find his death, I have looked at the deaths abroad when I went to Kew and it is not there.

He had a child Jane born January, 1904 and his wife Elizabeth re-married 28th March, 1907.

I have found Crew list for the ship Majestic where a Charles Wilson was discharged 12th Sept. 1906, but the address is 52 Phoebe Ann St. His last address on the 1901 Census is Gorden Street. So I am not sure if it is the same one, I thought I could check that up when I got back.

From the above it is possible to order a death cert, but it would be a long shot as little info will be given on the cert.

There are several Charles W deaths between 1902 and 1906 in the National Archives, series BT 334, Record set - Deaths at sea, 1781-1968, but little data apart from ages, year and month.

Yes I have that certificate it is for a seaman with the same name born in Guernsey. I have checked that one out.

You have been quite thorough. I think you should also consider the possibility that he didn't die before his wife married again, it wouldn't be unknown, either if he didn't make contact on his return or they decided to separate and she to wed again.

Just being inquisitive and I'm sure someone will have greater knowledge of the Dock Board.

Recorded on the 1901 census for Charles occupation was 'Sailor for Dock Board'

I know the dock board had, Tugs, Gig boats and responsibility for the Pilot boat, I don't know if they had seamen in their employment who ventured away from the Mersey (Ocean going)

Regarding his wife re-marrying I do not think he was still alive, as they were Catholics and I remember my grandmother was always upset over loosing her only brother. Family folklore was that he died at sea. (But maybe that was just away from home in this country I do not know).

The last concrete evidence of his ships was on the Campania when he was discharged on the 29th December. His address is right on that and that is the one with the R.V.2 No.

Do you think when I can get to the library the poll books would connect with the address on the Majestic for 1906.

Because that just narrows the death even more.

Can you scan that record card, both sides if there is anything on the reverse, and post the image here?

It's often even more of a possibility of a subsequent bigamous marriage as, even if they could afford it, they would be unlikely to get a divorce.

The Gores directories should be annual at the Record Office for around that date.
