History of Liverpool

Is there a succinct history of Liverpool that encompasses the 18th and 19th Centuries an shows the original streets and where the tradesmen lived, the meaning of various occupations, the retail price index for the period, the worthies etc. I am trying to get a flavour of the city as it was in the 18th and early 19th Century, a period of great change. Another angle is trying to work out why an impoverished widow, with 9 children, would remove from Warrington in 1810 where her family lived and where she could get support from her wealthy family.
Thanks for any ideas
Peter

I think you may get a number of answers for this query. For streetmaps C1900 this is pretty good,
http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk/ scroll down a little, click the square with the letters all over it and then top left link to the street you want, you should be able to match up some of the main streets with a current map, such as maps.google.co.uk.
You will find a number of sites for old occupations and their meanings, including
http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/
I would recommend that you join the Lancashire Library, you will then be able to access the old newspapers online via their site using your Library Card number.

Old directories of Liverpool give a brief historical timeline record. For a more detailed history there are various free online books including this one:-
Ramsay Muir - "A History of Liverpool"

Here is a zoom-able and moveable map from the end of the 19th century which will give you an overview of the city's street layout:-

You don't need to, click the link, it takes you to an online version. You can either read it on your computer or download it and send to an ereader.

Thought this may be useful. I've just finished reading on my Kobo (e-reader) via the Kobo (anagram of book) website, a free download book called Recollections of Old Liverpool - a Nonagenarian. May be too early but interesting nonetheless. Lizzie
