family tree

I have been researching my family tree and have uncovered some anomalies. The first is, my family was from West Derby and were married, christened and I presume buried at St Mary's in West Derby village. But where was the graveyard? Is it still in existence? I went to the church, but could find no trace of a graveyard.

Secondly, my grandfather's family was originally from the North East, but they migrated to Liverpool in the early 1800s, presumably for work. A John Carr married an Elizabeth Latham. They had a son they called John Latham Carr; he in turn had a son called John Latham Carr II; and there was a third son also called John Latham Carr (III) who was my grandfather's brother. He appears not to have had any children, but he did marry a woman from Portugal. There is a record of her travelling to Portugal under her maiden name and it is possible John Latham Carr III emigrated to America. However, that is only a rumour. I can find no evidence of his existence after his marriage. How might I find out more?

Thirdly, my grandfather's middle name was Watson - George Watson Carr. I believe son's were often named after a maternal relative's maiden name, but cannot find anyone named Watson in the history. Anyone any clues?

Chris
Can you let us have details of the marriage of John Carr and Elizabeth Latham and births of John Latham Carr II and III and George Watson Carr. What was the name of the portuguese wife?

Alex

Your location states UK, but it doesn't mean you are from Liverpool or Lancashire so I am unable to assume that you have visited West Derby just because you live near, but may have travelled a distance to visit.

First of all a little more information would be best - when you say West Derby, do you actually mean that they lived there or were births/marriages etc. registered in the West Derby Registration district which actually covers a large area around Liverpool and north of the town, even as far as Bootle and other areas north.

I notice that you mention "christened" does the register entry not give the detail of the parish name?

Can you perhaps give details of the censuses you have found them on?

Ancestry worldwide has American censuses available on which you may find John Latham Carr - again with no dates when he may have emigrated we are unable to help but your local library should have Ancestry, and possibly also Findmypast available for your use, for free.

Middle names were often given for an ancestor but it may be that you need to search further back than you have so far, or even sideways. Look all around a subject, check Wills to see if anybody in the family are mentioned, the name may have been given to a son in gratitude for a bequest. This would be no easy task as the connection may not be obvious.

Hope some of these suggestions help.

John Latham Carr m Emma White (he's born Gateshead 1854)

their son
John Latham Carr born West Derby 1883 marries Lydia Lewthwaite he dies 1954

their son John Latham Carr born 1905 marries in 1931 to Maria Dagraca at St Mary the Virgin West Derby in Liverpool (this according to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk). On other sites it's Maria Da Graca Santos. He dies in Liverpool in 1981

There are a number of trees for this family on Ancestry as well as their christenings, marriages and census entries.

I presume you mean the J L Carr who died in 1981. If it were me I would buy the death certificate and see if that gave me helpful information on whether he was a widower etc.

I am originally from Liverpool, but now live in Durham. The church is St Mary the Virgin, West Derby. I visited last year, but couldn't find the graveyard. I did find a huge cemetery a couple of miles away, but no relevant headstones. I just wondered if there was a specific graveyard associated with the church that I had somehow missed when I was there.

When you say "Liverpool BMD site" where are you actually searching? Can you post the actual URL link?

There is no Church Burial Ground For St. Mary's West Derby. Also I don't think Lancashire BMD is complete yet. The local Cemetery would be West Derby Cemetery/Anfield Cemetery.

As one of the churchwardens of St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church I can categorically state that there is no graveyard in the church grounds.

There is a garden of remembrance in the church grounds but this is purely for the burial of ashes.

Also all registers over 10 years old have been submitted to the Local Records section of Central Library.

Hi,
As Katie indcated, according to the coverage information provided on that site very few deaths registered at Liverpool Registry Offices [there are more than one!] have yet been indexed [transcribed] for the 1900s, even for the very early 1900s. That is why John Carr Lathom's death is not available on the site.

The death is indexed on Findmypast and Ancestry where coverage up to 2005 is available. The FreeBMD site [ http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ ] deaths index currently goes up to 1983 but is a work-in-progress and is far from complete.

Just to add that if you wanted to order a certificate from the GRO rather than the local register office you would need the reference as given from the GRO indexes which is what is given by Dickiesam and includes volume and page numbers and is available on the free site FreeBMD.
