Living relatives

Hi there,
My Gt.Gran Emma Britton died in 1941, buried in Kirkdale cemetary. I'm trying to find any relations to her still living in Liverpool. Has anyone managed to do this? I'm so interested in my Liverpool family and would love to find out if I have cousins down there. I think my Mother never told me about her parents is because they got married in Barlinnie prison in 1907, for housebreaking. I thought, at first, she was pregnant, but it was 2yrs.later, before she had her first baby. So. if there any directories of any kind I could look up that would be great. Otherwise, I'll just have to wait the Spring and visit your fabulous library. Thanks for any help I may get.

We are often asked this and although we are primarily concerned with the past we put together a few suggestions that might be useful to you.
I was wondering if you had asked the Allerton Cemetery Lodge who else is in the same grave, assuming you have the grave number, Telephone: 0151 233 3004 E-Mail:
cemeteriesandcrematoria@liverpool.gov.uk
They usually make a charge for checking their records, however if you were to have an exact date they might be a little more helpful.

Hi,
I knew the name rang a bell. From 2013.....
http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =marilib13
Info given there conflicts somewhat with the current post unless we are barking up the wrong tree. For instance, Scotland's GRO do not show an Emma or Emmaline marrying a groom Britton/Britten in 1907.

I wonder if the question has anything to do with this?
Posted on Anc message boards some years ago, Barlinnie Prison.
"My grandparents Charles Robert Alexander and Jeanie Alexander, nee Britton were married in above prison 12th March, 1907. Could anyone know why he was in prison and for how long? This has some consternation in our family as no-one ever mentioned this or their names to me"

Hi Bert,
I just had to take a look! Charles Alexander was 22 when he married and Jeannie Britton was 18. Their first child was Jeanie, bn 1909, and according to the Scots' census her mother Jeanie was bn in England abt 1889. It would appear that the Emma Britton who died in 1941 [bn abt 1866] was probably the mother of Jeanie bn abt 1889.
Deaths Jun 1941: Britton, Emma [75] - Liverpool N. 8b 644
And these look like siblings of the child Jeanie...
Births Dec 1912: Alexander, Thomas [Britton] - W.Derby 8b 564
Births Sep 1917: Alexander, Marguerita [Britton] - W. Derby 8b 446
Births Mar 1923: Alexander, Charles [Britton] - W.Derby 8b 539
Is our poster looking for descendants of the above 3?

Hi DS,
Jeanie, 1889, will be Jane Britton, 1889, West Derby, 8b 403.

Hi Bert,
And this has been covered previously. Emma Finner may have married Thomas Britton and in 1891 they are with the Finner family.

Re:

Intrigued by the entry in the 1910+1 census that 2 children had been born since marriage and one had died I discovered she was in fact pregnant when 'Jeannie' Britton when married Charles Robert Alexander.
Scotland's GRO has the following...
Birth: Emmaline Alexander
Born: 23 August 1907.
Where born: 36 Logie Street, Govan, Lanark.
Father: Charles Alexander [present at birth]
Father's occupation: Grocer's vanman.
Mother: Jeannie Alexander nee Britton
Parents' marriage: 12 March 1907
Death: 1908 - ALEXANDER, EMMALINE [age 0] - GOVAN, GLASGOW, LANARK - Scots Gro ref: 646/02 0470

Well, Dickiesan, you've outdone yourself again. I'm just amazed that you found out about baby Emmaline. I didn't even know that Charles and Emma lived in Govan at that time. They ended up living in a village near me called New Cumnock. They stayed there for 2 and a half years with their family, in 1926. I visited the farm where they stayed and spoke to the owner and she very kindly showed me their sleeping arrangements. The children went to an old school there. They moved back to Govan and I'm now on the trail once more. Anyway, thanks to everyone once more for all the help.
I'll try the cemetery website next. I tried to look up Allerton cemetery, but it gave me two churches I, of course, wouldn't know. I thought all I had to do was look up an Allerton cemetery and there it would be. I'm now looking for descendants. Where does the time go? I'll leave you in peace now and phone the family about baby Emma.

Hi,
I put the following in a post a day or so ago, more or less asking the question....
Are these births siblings of the child Jeanie?
Births Dec 1912: Alexander, Thomas [Britton] - W.Derby 8b 564
Births Sep 1917: Alexander, Marguerita [Britton] - W. Derby 8b 446
Births Mar 1923: Alexander, Charles [Britton] - W.Derby 8b 539
And if it is descendants of the above you are trying to find in this area, can you confirm whom you are descended from for 'elimination' purposes?

Hi once more,
I'm descended from the Alexander side of the family. My Mum was the last baby to be born to my Gran, Jeanie. She had my Mum in Govan in 1928. My Mum and her Sister Jeanie were the only ones born in Govan, hence the hard time I had finding my Aunts and Uncles, who were born in Jonville Street, Liverpool.I'm now trying to fid any Liverpool connections. I'm sure it'll be a lot easier when I come down in the Spring and look up local phone books and Voters Rolls.

I think here you are referring to my post above where I suggested you contact Allerton Cemetery Lodge - this is different from the Cemetery, it is the central point of contact for all burials. They are not very willing to do blanket searches, charging £10 per cemetery per year, but if you have a Cemetery and Grave Number they are usually much more helpful in advising who else is in the grave. Use the details I gave above, don't approach churches etc.

Hi Bert and dickiesam,
Yes, I'm looking for the descendants of Jeanie and Charles's childrens. As they lived up here all their adult lives, I'll go onto 192.com. I hope you can help with a small question. My Gt.Gran Emma lived at 54 Jonville Road, Walton, with my Gran, Jeanie. Can you tell me how to find out if Jeanie had any brothers or sisters? I've tried afew sites, but I've just been getting nowhere. If she had no relations, then I'm not going to be able to find any Liverpool cousins, and if, that's a dead end, I think I'm almost finished this FH. I'll come back down just to find Schools and any minor info I might come across. I'll see you all then, probably August. Can't wait.Marie.

Hi,
I put the following in a post a day or so ago, more or less asking the question....
Are these births siblings of the child Jeanie?
Births Dec 1912: Alexander, Thomas [Britton] - W.Derby 8b 564
Births Sep 1917: Alexander, Marguerita [Britton] - W. Derby 8b 446
Births Mar 1923: Alexander, Charles [Britton] - W.Derby 8b 539
Have repeated the above post which shows births to an Alexander surname father and a mother whose maiden name was Britton in the Liverpool area between 1911 [Sep qtr] and 1925 Dec qtr... The only way to discover if the above are brothers and sisters of Jeanie to order a birth cert from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ . However, in order to try and avoid the wrong cert being sent out, when the application form asks if you know the GRO references [qtr, volume and page] tick the NO box. Just enter the child's name and year. Another page will open allowing you to enter the parents names. If it turns out the entry is not the right one for you the GRO will refund the fee of £9.25 in full.
If you get a birth cert that confirms the relationship we can point you in the right direction to try and trace living relatives.

Hi Marie.
Just a little bit of encouragement for you. My family split up when I was very young. All I could remember was that my Dad came from Liverpool and with the help of the forum and a few birth certs, I managed to identify some possible relatives. So at that point I had some names to work with. If the possibles were the right ones, there would be an Aunty and two Cousins, twins, who lived in Liverpool.
Some kind soul from the forum gave me some telephone numbers that just might be for the twins. I had at that point discounted the Aunty as she probably had died. So I nervously tried the numbers provided. The first few numbers proved negative but the calls were all well received.
I used the opening line of " sorry to bother you, but I am trying to find xxx, can you help me?"
There was one number left. I dialled and a man answered. I used my opening line and after I said can you help me, he said I might, but who are you. I announced myself and he said. you are my Cousin. I could have fallen of my chair. He said he new of me but did not know of my whereabouts. He also told me my Aunty was still alive. Well the floodgates opened, letters and photos followed, including some of my Father.
We all met up in Southport a couple of years ago. it was very timely as my Aunty died shortly afterwards. So Marie don't leave it too long
Gareth.
PS. Most library's carry copies of telephone directories.
