On the recently uploaded Liverpool Crew Lists 1861-1919 on Ancestry please let me have your opinion as to the address shown for CHAS DEGER 1903 aboard "Cedric".

I have my own interpretation but would apopreciate thoughts.

Looks like "Ridlist" St, perhaps misheard from Ridley Street ?

Nothing on A-Z that remotely resembles it :- http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co. ... eets.htm#R

and can find nothing in my ancient Daily Post Street Guides.

Charles was born 1858 in Montreal, looks like he came to Lpool 1887 on the Oregon.
Street name starts with Red?

Bit of a mystery this one.
Looked in my directories but nothing came up. Have to agree with Tina about starting Red, the e looks similar in the name Deger and Montreal.

Nothing comes up in 1901 census either for the name Deger apart from a correction which may be him, but not living at that address.
What did you think it may be Alex?

Just a thought  just happened to be in Ancestry when this appeared and giving an uneducated guess :!: :!:

The column with the address says........home address for communications in the event of emergency.

He was born in Montreal and I presume lived and boarded from there..........could it be a Canadian Address rather that a Liverpool address. Could it be Liverpool in Nova Scotia

Thanks to those who have taken time to look at this and for your posts.
I thought this might stump a few. Let me give you my thoughts...
Charles DE GIER ( variously spelled in all references that I have found) was my Great Grandfather. He is proving to be a little elusive...sought, glimpsed but never quite identified fully!

He married my GGrandmother Ellen MCHALE 21st December 1879 at St John's Liverpool (DEGIR) His father is stated as Albert, a mariner as was Charles.

In 1881 Census he is not at home, presumably away at sea. I susequently found Charles DE GARDE born Nice who I believe to be him ( aboard the SS Britannic in Langton Dock)

TNA Merchant Seamen Records have him on the Britannic in 1881 (Charles DE GIER) again born Niece(sic).
The Ancestry records also have him (Charles DEGIR) on the SS America in 1886 born Nice. All other (4) records on that database show him as born Montreal.

Family story told to me more than 30 years ago was that he was born in Marseilles but came to UK from Montreal. So finding these latest online records showing Montreal was a bit of a moment!

On the 1891 and 1901 Censuses he is shown as born MALTA!! I had always assumed that this was a red herring. My grandmother told me that he spoke with a very strong "foreign accent". I assumed he had said Marseilles and it was misheard as Malta. I am now thinking it may have been the Enumerator noting down in shorthand MT for Montreal and transcribing it as MLT for Malta. However, how likely is this on two occassions 10 years apart?

He died 1st April 1926 aged 69- per DCert -and is buried in Ford Cemetery.

Dates all fall in with a birth in 1855-1857 which ties in with Ancestry crew records.

As to the address... In 1901 he was living at 16a READING STREET, KIRKDALE. At 4a was his brother in law Robert MCHALE. The Ancestry entry above is for 4a "?" and I am presuming this is also as a result of his "foreign accent".

I don't think I'm going mad but you never know. My "current" theory is that he was probably born in Nice and at some time between went to Montreal, from where as a sefarer he ended up in Liverpool and married a local.

Plausible? Thoughts gratefully received.

Alex

Just a further thought Reading in a french accent could be Redin ( as in Rodin)
the entry looks like REDINT...just a thought.
