New to this and need help
my father was born in july 1934 in liverpool, and his father Frederick died in feb 1934, so unfortunately he did not know him or know anything about him, he was born in 1874, he may have been married before and may have come from Colwyn Bay, Wales.
he married Mary Milroy currie born 188 dec 89 and died april 1968. Sister Grace and Janet Barles Currie and brother Duncan, all i believe originated from the Isle of Arran, Scotland, again i know nothing about this side of the family.

Hello curriesimpson, and welcome.

To fill in a couple of gaps and to avoid 'guesswork' can you post the full name of your g.father Frederick please? And do you know where did he married Mary Currie?

Been fishing...... :D

Is this the marriage?
MARY M CURRIE married FREDERICK ROGERS
1932; Mar Qtr
WEST DERBY; Volume: 8B Page: 813

If correct do you have the marriage cert and can post the names of the respective fathers and their occupations? If you don't have the marriage cert I suggest you get one from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ It will cost £9.25.

Both Mary and Janet's births were registered in west Derby Registration District which covered large areas of Liverpool. You can see them for yourself on the site www.freebmd.org.uk

I suspect the family lived in Kirkdale and possibly the parents were Duncan and Margaret. If you buy Mary's birth certificate that will give you her parents names.

Can you confirm from documentary evidence that Mary Currie's middle name was indeed Milroy? There is a Scots birth in 1889 for a Mary Millar Currie, parents Andrew Gray and Mary Currie [nee McCrae].

Mary Milroy Currie's birth was registered March Q 1890, Janet Barles Currie's birth was registered June Quarter 1893 also West Derby and Duncan John Currie's West Derby reg district in 1888 .

I think the family are in Kirkdale and mother's name appears to be Maggie.

Now we know where Milroy comes from....

1901: RG12 Piece 2963 Folio 15 Page 24
Address: 44 Leison Street, Liverpool.
David Milroy Head 50 1841 Labourer - Scotland
Mary Harkness Wife 53 1838 - Scotland
Duncan Currie Boarder Married 50 1841 Labourer - Scotland
Maggie Currie Boarder 41 1850 - Scotland
Duncan J Currie Boarder 3 1888 - Liverpool
Mary Currie Boarder 1 1890 - Liverpool

Interesting and informative that David put down his wife's maiden name! A spare Scotland's People credit gave up this marriage:
1867 - MILROY, DAVID married HARKNESS MARY - KIRKCONNEL/DUMFRIES - Scots GRO ref 834/00 0005
Full image of certificate is there for 5 credits and will have the couple's parents' names.

I suggest you collate all the census information you can on the various families. If you don't have a sub to one of the online sites such as Ancestry or Findmypast your local library will probably be able provide access as Education Officer Hilary posted earlier.

Then delve back to Janet's parents' lineage such as their marriage....
Marriages Sep 1884: CURRIE, Duncan married Barles, Margaret [aka Maggie] Warnock - Liverpool 8b 284

1861 Scotland census....
BARLES, MARGARET W - 11 - KILBRIDE (BUTE) /BUTE - Scots GRO ref 553/00 001/00 001
Full family image available for 5 credits... http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

She appears to still be in Scotland in 1871 and possibly in 1881..
1881 BARLAS MARGARET - 28 - PERTH - 387/00 016/00 024

Hi and welcome to the forum, while I have been offline the crew appear to have given you lots of useful information.

As Dickiesam says, you may not have access to an online subscription site, but I notice that you live in the Liverpool area so I would suggest that you try either your local library which should have access to Ancestry, or the William Brown Street library - Record Office on 3rd Floor, which has free access to both Ancestry and Findmypast. You will be able to search the censuses on these.

If you are able to get there on a Tuesday afternoon the Society hosts a Help Desk between 1.30 and 4.00 pm and we would help you get up and running.

To find out who Frederick Rogers was, his 'history' etc, you need to get a starting point. I assume this to be his death, the only one in Liverpool for 1934....
Deaths Mar 1934: Rogers, Frederick [60] - W.Derby 8b 655

His given age at death indicates he was born about 1874. There are only two births registered in Liverpool for 1874 +/- 2years...
Births Mar 1872: Rogers, Frederick - Liverpool 8b 121
Births Sep 1872: ROGERS, Frederick Arthur - W.Derby 8b 496

I earnestly suggest you get his marriage cert to find his father's name which should enable you to find Frederick in the censuses from 1881 to 1911. As posted earlier you can get one from the GRO http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ It will cost £9.25.
Marriage: MARY M CURRIE married FREDERICK ROGERS
1932; Mar Qtr; WEST DERBY; Volume: 8B Page: 813

The marriage cert will also tell you if Frederick was a widower when he married Mary. From a brief look at the 1911 census I suspect this to have been the case.

This information may have come from a marriage certificate without which it's difficult to accept just verbal family legends. Each step is verified along the way working hand in hand with both censuses and certificates, the marriage will give addresses, occupations and ages as well as father's names.

Can we assume that you have taken the above advice and ordered the marriage certificate?

If you had a fair idea as to where they might have been living about the time of their marriage, you could check the nearest RC church to there at the Liverpool Record Office to see if the entry is there, saving you the cost of the certificate.

Marriage cert has now been found, he was a windower and his father was called Robert, also pics of his funeral which was a large expensive do! Some thing whichmy grandmother could not afford, i can only assume his children from previous marriage paid for..... what next and where do i look?

Ideally you should scan the cert and post the image here. There are all sorts of clues there such as the names of witnesses who could be siblings or even children of Frederick, and his father's occupation. Is his father shown as deceased? Although if he isn't it does not always mean he was still alive, just that the Registrar may not have asked the question.

Instructions for posting an image can be found here:
http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =16&t=9817

You ask "what next?" You could search the census following Frederick's probable birth around 1872 for him in a household with a Robert as a father. With luck you might get a match between the father's occupation then with the one on the marriage cert.
