Hi Everyone, Is there anyone who can shed any light on this institution and its workings ?
It was situated in 2 Town Row,West Derby,nearby to Mill Lane and St Marys C of E Church, did it have any direct connection with any religious order I wonder ?
I have also seen it described as an Orphans Home for Sailors Daughters.
There is so little known about this place and I am beginning to suspect that I just may have a family connection to it. Does anyone know who ran it or what became of it, did it merge into something else or just close down completely ?
I wonder what would have become of any records should there have been any kept ?

Liverpool Mercury 1877, It appears to be separate from the seaman's, that's not to say they didn't take in seaman's daughters

I'm just going to add a few details that Vic already knows, but to save duplication of research.

The Trade Directories name a Miss Ada Sherring as Matron but it isn't known if the Orphanage could have been multi religion and whether the RC children went to a local RC school.

Some of them went to the local school at West Derby and this is mentioned in local history books, the following information from Joyce Culling, Secretary of our Society.

It is known that some of the photographs do include some girls who were at the orphanage, so they definitely did attend the local village school.

The other book is THE PEOPLE OF WEST DERBY
Published privately by Bellefield Press for authors Coopers and Powell
contains memories of old West Derbyites including this from a lady who
would have been at village school during WW1 at least.

"The Orphanage ,opposite Village Hall, had about 20 children there,
all girls from sea-faring families.. A Miss Sheridan took them to
school all walking behind her in twos. Many of the girls ended up in
service for the well-to-do families and usually ended up marrying the
butcher or the gardener etc".
