Can someone with a directory help me please. I need to know what is the address of the large corner house, which sat on the corner of Upper Duke st and St James rd,. Was it No 1 St James, or Upper Duke st. I know between Rathbone st and St James rd, there was the bridge club, and then I think the next house belonged to a doctor, and then I think it was the corner plot, which I am asking about. I hope all this makes sense. Thanks

Kelly's 1968 directory was one of the last to be published and by then the area round Upper Duke Street was emptying.

It shows St James's Road starting at 26 Upper Duke Street.
The latter has 16, Bradley, Mrs Rose, tobacconist, then Rathbone Street then 20 Stoll, Bldg Contr, 22 Turton & Melville motors acc fctrs and Bridge Club then St James's Road, followed by St James's Cemetery .
The numbering on the 'odd' side starts with 5 & 7, after Berry Street.
St James's Road, right side, starts at no 9, Forrester, Doreen.

The 1849 large scale map of the area (Godfrey edition Liverpool sheet 25) does not number the buildings but the one on the corner of Upper Duke and St James's clearly has more frontage and an entrance on Upper Duke and not St J's.

Hope this helps.
