I am trying to research my Smith family in Liverpool: Charles Chaloner Smith (b.1830), James Smith (b.1805), Joshua Smith (b.1781?) and Thomas Smith (d.1781 Melling). Any information about them: work/houses/schools/family would be wonderful. We know nothing about this side of the family. I would love to go further back than Thomas Smith (d.1781) but don't know where to start.

Hi Sheila and welcome to the forum.
Because you have YoBs, do we assume you have already tracked the named people back through the censuses to 1841?

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Is there any chance that you have an address/area of Liverpool for the earlier names, is it coincidence that Joshua is born the same year as Thomas died ie 1781 and can you please tell us the evidence that you have for the death of Thomas in Melling.

Your James left a will. The probate index states
The will of James Smith of Barkley House Seaforth near Liverpool who died 4 April 1872 at Barkley House was proved at Liverpool by James Barkley Smith of Tower Buildings merchant and Charles Chaloner Smith of Tower Buildings merchant the sons 2 of the executors
Effects under £20,000
Also in the index in 1872
is a James Smith of Leicester Street whose will was proved by a John Smith of Melling. John was the brother.
You can purchase a copy of the will it may well be very helpful in your research.
