Thompson- Braithwaite Liverpool

Post by irene »

Is anybody researching any Thompsons in Liverpool?

In particular I can't find a marriage record for ALEXANDER THOMPSON (b 1878 Liverpool, parents Henry George Thompson and Sarah Ann Braithwaite) and LILY G. (b 1878 Birkenhead) his wife (or so they declared in the 1901 census taken at 99 Paddington, Liverpool). They had a little girl Olive Louisa Thompson (1901-1902) and on her birth cert. mother is Lily Thompson formely Waters (or looks like that) and address is the same as census. Can't find any trace of either after 1901. There is a death record for an Alexander Thompson in 1905 but the page on the record book containing the burial record is damaged and there is no order book record (might be a common grave). Alexander and Lily were living in 1901 with his sister (Daisy) and mother (Sarah Ann) but in 1911 census Daisy is living alone as mother had just died Q1 1911... can't trace her grave either.

Someone researching Braithwaite might know what happened to her son Alexander Thompson?

I've tried every possible archive online. My only hope is that someone is researching this or another part of the family and might have some info.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Which cemetery have you found a burial for Alexander in 1905?

Have you checked the marriage between Daisy L Thompson and Richard R Knowles at Liverpool Methodist Church, Whitefield Road in Q2 1912, GRO Ref W.Derby 8b 1103

I'm suspecting they had at least three offspring, and possibly moved to Lancaster.

Thanks Simone and Mary!

Mary, Richard Robert and Daisy Louisa had three children, one was my grandmother Eveline Louisa...the family lived in 72 Langton Rd all their lives till Daisy, who survived her husband, left the house to my gran in her will. My gran used to live on the other side of the road. Sold both houses and moved to Camphill Road L25.

When Daisy married Richard her father was deceived (he died in 1901 and she married in 1912) and told everybody she was an orphan. I know her mother died in 1911, indeed in the 1911 census Daisy is living alone, but I don't know what happened to her brother Alexander and his wife Lily G.

There are two Alexander Thompson born the same year and both died. One I found the burial record of and I know it was the wrong one because the grave owner was the wrong mother. The other died in Jan 1905. I checked every single cemetery register in the archive and could not find him anywhere...except there was this page relating to January 1905 I could not read because badly damaged I think it was West Derby cemetery, I need to check my notes, and that would make sense as his father was buried there in 1905 in a common grave. I did try the order book but with no look.

We await details of which Cemetery you found this and please let us know where online you found that detail.

There is a death entry for an Alexander Thompson W. Derby 8b 327 in Q4 1905, this conflicts with the page of January 1905 that you found.

I've just checked my notes

Alexander Thompson death dec. 1905 in West Derby ... you were right Mary...
abt 1879
age of death 26
West Derby
Lancashire
8B
327

Sarah A. Thompson Q1 1911 in West Derby
abt 1847
age at death 64
West Derby
lancashire
8B
3

...also Alex's parents George Henry Thompson and Sarah A were married in St Nicholas in 1865

Can't find now the list of cemeteries I checked I presume though it was West Derby for the reasons stated above.

I'm going to Liv at the beginning of next month and will try again. What I need to know though is: say the page is indeed damaged and there is no order book reference...how can I find out what cemetery they are buried in? Is there another way? If they are not buried in any Liverpool cemetery...then...where could they be buried in Liverpool?

I don't think that there are any registers for West Derby cemetery online which is why I was interested to discover how you found that out.

If the page is damaged on microfilm, you should ask the Archives to see the original as it may be only bad filming and they will allow you to peruse the book.

There is a handbook of Cemeteries at the Record Office, you obviously know that there are numerous cemeteries and graveyards in Liverpool, at that date many churches were still using their own land for burials but are we suspecting that they wouldn't have been able to afford to purchase the grave, if so, then it is unlikely.

To make the most of your time at the Record Office I would suggest that you make sure of the exact date of death so that you could check the newspapers in case there was an entry in the deaths, it will save you searching three months of newspapers.

Lastly, there is a central list of burials held at Allerton Cemetery Lodge, contact details are on this post http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =14&t=5739 however they do charge £10 per cemetery per year for a search, so best to do most of the groundwork yourself.

Hi Mary and thanks for all the valuable tips and info.

The records I consulted re the burials where in the Lpool archive on microfilm as you imagined. I was there last summer. It's important for me to know that I can view the original records book so I can check also that damaged page.

Thanks again!

Irene
