Hi and welcome to the forum.

Are you able to give George and Mary's years of birth as that may help to identify them.

Which workhouse were they in?

Coincidentally you are the second enquiry we have had today mentioning the Widnes Alkali Company. Bert posted on the other a link that you may find interesting. http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Widnes_Alkali_Co

Im unable to find georges birth ,all I know his army papers say hes from wotton under edge Gloucestershire .I would expect it to be around1830/35 as on the 1871 census he is 9 years older than mary --and her birth is around 1845--which made her 21 when they married in galway Ireland in 1866 --I have followed several leads for georges birth , the only thing I can find is a baptism in 1831 --parents Robert and sarah Clarke ---he isn't with them on the 41 census which worries me as I have found a death of a boy called George Clarke aged 7 from wotton under edge in 1838 --he burnt to death . I have no proof that he is or isn't my George , I sent for his d/c but it was witnessed by the coroner not the parents ,so no nearer there --there seem to be clarkes all over wotton under edge --there must be something im missing somewhere, his fathers name was Robert and georges w/c says Robert was a miner ?or miller ]so im desperate to find his birth ---where he was from birth to 1853,when he joined the army ---and his death or what happened to him between 1874 and 1880--its lack of knowing what im doing and where to look that's my problem - :(

If you can just give details of the family you have on the 1841 census, just copy it out onto here. If you are using Ancestry, the ref details beginning H0107 will be at bottom of the transcription page :)

I have baptisms of an emma ,ELI, ruth , GEORGE, rowland and Pamela Clarke baptized at st mary the virgin wotton under edge -parents Robert Clarke and sarah Clarke (croome)the 1841 census shows no Robert the father ,and just ELI, RUTH and ROWLAND CLARKE with SARAH --I have just found a George Clarke at a school in Cheltenham aged 12 on the 1841 census--ive googled the school and it has military traditions --as my George went in the army -could this have been him I wonder --but then I cant find him in 1851,--he joined the army in 1853 I don't have his attestation papers -there are none, however I have documents saying he came from wotton under edge in his army papers .ive traced emma ,ruth and Rowland into Bristol , I also have what I believe to be eli death certificate in 1838 ---but George isn't with them on the 1851 census ,is that any help

but Mary gave birth to my grandfather James Clarke in March 1877--there was no father's name on his birth certificate
That could indicate that George Clarke was not the father of James. He may have left the family home. And have you considered this death?
Deaths Mar 1878: CLARKE, George [41] - Wigan 8c 28
Widnes did not have a District Registration Office at that time and George may have died in Wigan or in an area under that District's remit. The age at death fits with the 1871 census info posted by Simone.

I see that the baptism of George in 1831 states his father Robert is a Millman, so that looks promising doesn't it if the marriage says Miller

yes although the marriage of George says his father was a miner ---I think the writing was a bit out as if you write miller but were careless and joined the 2 Ls ,it would read miner not miller - as for George not being james father im 50/50 on that as I am prepared for that I will look into that death you just sent me in wigan -I have several D/C for George all incorrect ones --I will get there eventually --I hope

Re: Deaths Mar 1878: CLARKE, George [41] - Wigan 8c 28
Those are the only details available without buying the death cert. As the cert you have appears to match the age at death, Registration District, qtr and year, then it will be the same man since it is the only match. However, if his given age in 1871 was out by several years then another search based around 1831 is required.

It would be useful if you could list the certs you already have in order that we can discount any hits. Just a brief summary of each one... age at death, registration district, qtr and year.
