Henrietta Lancaster (Yates)

My grandmother, known to us as Henrietta Yates but on her death certificate has her surname as "Lancaster also Yates" died in Liverpool on 18th September 1950. I would dearly love to find her burial place and as we know she left her husband and 5 children to be with my grandfather to whom she had 2 sons, I'm hoping someone out there can help me, would appreciate it. I must have lots of relatives out there
I do not know if Lancaster was my grandmothers maiden or married name. The address on her death certificate was 1 Newton Terrace, Liverpool, place of death was 121 Smithdown Road.
Religion? All I know is that she wasn't Catholic and her "husband" , my grandfather, William Henry Yates (my dad's name) was a member of the Orange Lodge. They also had another son, Walter Yates who I believe died at the age of 26 in 1940.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
We could make some suggestions as to which cemeteries should be checked but would need a few details. What was her address on the certificate? What religion was she? Do you know who she was married to, perhaps Lancaster was a previous married or maiden name. Do you know what her maiden name was?
If you are interested in tracing living relatives, we have put together a few suggestions to help, here

My fathers name was William Henry Yates and his brother was Walter Yates. My dad's birth was not registered, he had no birth certificate consequently the difficulty in finding any info. The only certificate we have is a baptismal one. Wesleyan Church, Soho Street, Liverpool which is no longer there
The date given on baptismal certificate is June 14 1925

Looking for a marriage between a Henrietta and a Lancaster, taking in to consideration when Henrietta came of age from birth year taken from death registration. Best fit between 1892 and when the child Walter Yates was born 1914.
Henrietta Ellison, bn, baptised, 1876, Liverpool married Charles William Lancaster, bn 1872.
Married Liverpool 1894.
This Henrietta if its the correct one had in 1911 the required amount of children to leave.
Amelia, 16
Ellen, 13,
Hannah,11
John, 8
Esther, 4
Alice, 1

Thanks for that Bert. Now a major shot in the dark...
Is this William Henry Yates travelling to New Zealand?
Passenger: Mr W H YATES
Age 39; Birth year 1912
Marital status: M
Occupation: PLATER
Departure date 16 Nov 1951
Departure port: SOUTHAMPTON
Destination port: WELLINGTON
Destination: WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND
Ship's name: TAMAROA
Shipping line: SHAW SAVILL LINE
Also travelling with Mr Yates:
Mrs E [Elizabeth?] Yates [35]; Mstr W H Yates Jnr [14]; Miss J Yates [11]; Miss E Yates [7] and Mstr P Yates [1].
Last address in UK: 116 Berkbeth Road, Huyton, Liverpool.
If it is, wouldn't he have had a birth certificate in order to get a passport? If it isn't him, when did he arrive in NZ and was he already married?
Re above family....
Marriages Dec 1936: YATES, William H and Allen, Elizabeth - Liverpool N 8b 944
and birth of their oldest child....
Births Jun 1937: Yates, William H [Allen] - Liverpool N. 8b 742
If the the William Henry who married Elizabeth is the man we are looking for, he must have been born before 1918 and some years before he was baptised. Perhaps born abt 1912 as per passenger manifest?
If it is the wrong man this post will be removed!

My dad, william Henry Yates is the one you list as going to NZ with my mum, Elizabeth and us 4 kids. He was born in 1912 and the only way he got into NZ was purely on his baptismal certificate which took my mother many weeks to track down. And yes, he was not baptised until 1925

Mary, you mentioned that you could offer suggestions on a possible burial place for my grandmother once I had given more information which I think I have. Would appreciate your further help on this.

We have a list of cemeteries in Liverpool and the dates they were opened
http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =14&t=5739 as you can see there are many, generally more than people realise.
However at the date you are interested in, there is not going to be a transcription entry online. But the location of South Liverpool, and particularly Smithdown Road, I'm thinking it might be worth a punt asking about Toxteth Park.
There is also a central Register for all burials held at Allerton Cemetery Lodge.
Telephone: 0151 233 3004
E-Mail:
cemeteriesandcrematoria@liverpool.gov.uk
They usually make a charge for checking their records, however if you were to have an exact date they might be a little more helpful.
Generally speaking Allerton Cemetery Lodge charge £10 per cemetery per year to do a look up but if you told them that she actually
was buried in Toxteth Park but didn't know the grave number, they would probably check it for you.
My other suggestion is to check the local newspapers for a death entry as many of them would provide the funeral details.
Both of these suggestions would depend on the exact date of death which I'm not sure has been given above, am I wrong?

Hi
My grandmother lived off Smithdown Road, just a couple minutes walk, in fact right next to Toxteth Cemetery... she died in 1943 but was taken to Allerton Cemetery for burial. As far as I am aware my grandfather did not ask for this cemetery as it wasn't particularly convenient for him or the family, but it was rather the cemetery 'suggested' to him at the time.. We get the impression that it was the one generally used at that time for the area..
So maybe worth a look there.

Are you certain that Henrietta's home address was Newton Terrace? Trying to locate it in order to put it close to a cemetery but no joy yet. Only found Newton Close, Newton Court, Newton Road [all Liverpool 12], and Newton Way [Liverpool 3]. Perhaps it was in an area 'developed' since the 1950s as many were.

Hi DS,
The nearest I can get you for now, Newton Terrace, Rokeby St, Liverpool,
Try,
William Bloomfield
RG14 P22546.
Failing that, my trusty 1970s street atlas of Merseyside, including, sends us off to Newton Terrace, Rathbone st, Earlestown, bottom of Sankey St/Earle St.

Thanks Bert, I reckon that is probably the one and I actually knew where Rokeby Street was, and still is apparently. My Dad had a mate who lived there [1940s]. It is just round the corner from Fox Street and off Everton Brow. St Timothy's C of E church was on Rokeby Street. That entire area was bulldozed and rebuilt.

This isn't gelling with the address in Everton.
I think checking newspapers for a death entry should be the first call.
