Has anyone heard of a company called Lathams?

Post by chelmesis »

I have been fortunate to be given a copy of a photograph album compiled by my Uncle who is now sadly deceased. One of the photos shows a group of girls in long dresses and mop caps photographed outside a building. It's an old photograph and was probably taken before 1920. The caption underneath the photo reads Mum at work Lathams. the lady in question is my Grandmother Georgina Kirk (formerly Barton). She lived in Liverpool and Bootle for all of her life so Lathams must have been somewhere in the area. Does anyone know what kind of business Lathams was and where it was based?

Many thanks

Steve Kirk

Coupled with.....
a group of girls in long dresses and mop caps
The mop caps would have been a must in a cake factory!

Thanks everyone for your help so far.

I'm away from home on holiday at the moment and only have limited IT at my disposal but I will try to download the photo following the instructions I have been given. If I am unsuccessful then I will definitely do it on Friday when I am back at home.

Looking at the photo my first impression was that the outfits suggested something to do with food preparation, so the cake factory looks like a good fit to me!

Thanks again

Steve

I already have a copy of the record of marriage at Christchurch Kensington posted above. Although not directly related to my original question, Henry Kirks father is shown as John Kirk Commercial Traveller whereas his Birth Certificate gives his fathers name as Henry Joseph Kirk. Henry Joseph is the correct name so I'm not sure how it came to be recorded incorrectly in the parish register.

For some reason I haven't been able to find the Bartons in the 1901 census although I'm sure they were in Liverpool.

I've tried to upload the photo taken at Lathams but so far without success. The only copy I have with me is in pdf format which probably explains why I'm having problems. So will do it when I get home.

Thanks for all the help

Steve

I love that, wonder if you posted it on some of the Liverpool groups on Facebook you might get somebody recognising another of the girls, might help to confirm the place.

The man front and centre in the cap is wearing a white apron. That, and the aprons and caps worn by the girls, to my mind is very indicate of a bakery.
