Margaret Cummins

In the 1881 census I have a Margaret Cummins born Liverpool 1856 who is recorded as a Widow. She is in the house of Thomas and Jane Cummins, my great great grandparents. They were born and married in Dublin and then settled in Liverpool.
What I am interested in finding out is who Margaret is. I am guessing at sister-in-law but don't have much information on Thomas Cummins' family other than parents John and Margaret and 2 Dublin addresses, 3 Cornmarket and 2, Britain Court, both Dublin.
Any ideas or help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Barbara

Hi Barbara,

Have you got a link for Thomas’ baptism? I could only find his marriage in Dublin:-

Margaret could be Margaret Nolan who married Patrick Cummings at St Michael in the City, Liverpool in 1877. There was a Margaret Nolan who was born on 19 Mar 1859, baptised on 24 Mar 1859 at St Vincent de Paul, father's name: Patrick Nolan, mother's name: Mary McCann. A Patrick Cummings of Ford Street died in 1879 aged 30 years old and was buried on 22 Jul 1879 at Walton Park.

Hi Barbara,
Unless it was an error, according to that census Margaret Cummins [widow] was born 1856 in Liverpool, so she would be likely to marry within Liverpool. The earliest she would probably marry is 1872 when she would be 16. But there are no Liverpool marriages for a Margaret ? marrying a Cummins, 1872 to 1881....

So, since she was a widow I looked for male Cummins deaths in Liverpool where the YoB was 1850 +/- 10 years....
Deaths Mar 1873: CUMMINS, Patrick 33 Liverpool 8b 15
Deaths Sep 1874: CUMMINS John 28 Liverpool 8b 144
Deaths Mar 1876: CUMMINS Edward 26 W. Derby 8b 438
Deaths Sep 1876: Cummins Michael 16 Liverpool 8b 59
Deaths Sep 1876: Cummins Patrick 23 W.Derby 8b 253
Deaths Sep 1876: Cummins Joseph 28 W.Derby 8b 339
Deaths Jun 1880: Cummins Edward 23 Liverpool 8b 53

I wonder if either of the birth years for the two Patrick Cummins match that of the one that Blue found?

Hi DS

There's at least two different spellings for the surname Cummins and Cummings. Also seen Commins in Ireland. Also variations probably due to error.

Thanks for the pointer Blue... have to change my glasses. That 1877 marriage looks promising..
Marriages Sep 1877: CUMMINGS, Patrick and Nolan, Margaret - Liverpool 8b 116
Is the marriage online to see his father's name?

No St Michael's in the City the C of E church in Upper Pitt Street is not on OPC, Ancestry or Family Search. Lancs BMD identify it but no further details anywhere.

Is it promising enough for me to put on my list for next Tuesday?

For some reason my reply doesn't seem to have 'taken' so apologies to all in case you think I haven't responded!
Many thanks to everyone who has contributed.
The spelling of Cummins is problematic. By the time my great grand mother, Mary Jane was married it had become Cummings.
One of the witnesses on Thomas' marriage cert was Michael Cummins and I did wonder if he might have been Margaret's husband.
I have very little info on the family in Ireland apart from the marriage. Is there any mileage in looking for them in the Irish cencuses?
Thanks to all who have taken the trouble to respond and to Mary for offering a look-up.

Hi Barbara

It might be a good idea to ask if Mary would look-up the Patrick Cummings and Margaret Nolan marriage in Liverpool Q3 1877. The first available Irish census (1901) has 61 pages of results just containing the surname for the Cummins spelling alone in County Dublin!

Thanks Blue. Mary, would it be possible to do a look-up?

Well the Irish censuses are free, you can browse to your hearts content and see if anything clicks.

Look up won't be until next Tuesday.

No rush with the look-up, Mary, they're not going anywhere.
I'm not too hopeful on the Irish censuses as the nearest one would have been a considerable time after the marriage. The chances of Thomas' parents still being around are pretty slim.
Another thought I had was a remarriage for Margaret but an initial search hasn't come up with anything.
Back to the drawing board....

There is only limited registers for St Michael's I'm afraid, 283MIC has only 1826-28 & Sep 1835.
