Holy Cross area Catholics - Sutton, Joyce, Giblin, Corcoran

Post by Brugge »

I'm trying to find out where in Ireland my Liverpudlian Irish ancestors lived.

The families (Sutton, Joyce, Giblin, Corcoran and others) lived around the
Holy Cross area - Adlington Street in the 1940s.

I have seen various census records which mention Ireland as the place of birth.

But is there anyway I can fond out where in Ireland the families came from?
Would there be any church records ( a sort of 'membership record')
that might give this? Baptism records give no hint as to the birth
places of the parents.

In particular, I am interested in
John Sutton, born c. 1819 in Ireland, d 2 Jan 1890 Liverpool (married Jane Carr)
his son, John born 1849 in Liverpool, d 29 Aug 1914 Liverpool (marr. to Sarah Joyce)
Also Michael Giblin b abt 1860 Ireland, d 27 Dec 1894 Liverpool.

Can anyone help with some leads/suggestions?

Roger

Hi and welcome to the forum.

That question is always a difficult one as there are no records for this, the ship was the equivalent of a ferry, just pay your money and come across.

The most informative census is usually the 1911, where they sometimes gave a county in addition to Ireland, not always I know.

My suggestions involve a bit of effort with the marriage indexes etc. By the looks of it you may know a husband and wife's names where the marriage took place in Ireland. The method of searching is the way that we used to have to with English marriages before the advent of computers and databases. Familysearch site has the indexes for Ireland and if you try to calculate the possible marriage date, make a note of all the male names showing up in the index, date, volume and page number and cross reference with the female name to try to match the reference.

Another exercise I have been trying out myself recently is to check as many baptisms as possible - I note you have a few, take notes of the godparents and try to trace these in the census also. If you can find their children's baptisms you may also discover whether your family were godparents to theirs, could be you might discover more relatives. The more connections you discover the more chance there is of somebody giving a more accurate birthplace to give you a clue where to search.

Thanks, Mary.
Most of the marriages took place in Liverpool
although there was one that happened in Ireland - so I will
follow your suggestions regarding that one.

Best wishes,

Hello Roger and welcome.
In particular, I am interested in
John Sutton, born c. 1819 in Ireland, d 2 Jan 1890 Liverpool (married Jane Carr)
his son, John born 1849 in Liverpool, d 29 Aug 1914 Liverpool (marr. to Sarah Joyce)
Also Michael Giblin b abt 1860 Ireland, d 27 Dec 1894 Liverpool.
Irish Civil BMD Indices did not start until 1864, for earlier events you have to depend on parish records. This is one source although it is a pay-per-view site...
http://www.rootsireland.ie/

May I suggest you post more information that you may have regarding the two John Suttons and Michael Giblin? For instance since you have marriages you may have a father's name and occupation for John Sutton Snr. If you have a marriage cert for Michael Giblin the same info will be there as well. And tell us if you have found them in any England census by posting the summary page reference. This will be along the lines of [for 1861] RG09 - Piece: 3801 - Folio: 51; Page: 32

Re: Deaths Dec 1894: Giblin, Michael [34] - Liverpool 8b 34
Do you know from his death cert if he was married and to whom?

Is this his marriage?
Marriages Dec 1885: Giblin, Michael and Corcoran, Catherine - Liverpool 8b 274. From LancsBMD: Register Office or Registrar Attended.

Hi Roger,
This is the only Giblin entry in the Griffiths Valuation 1848-1864.
See http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php for information about the Valuation.

Griffiths Valuation Record Information
Tenant: GIBLIN, ROGER
Landlord: GEORGE FRENCH
Location: Co SLIGO; Barony of COOLAVIN; Union of BOYLE.
Parish: KILCOLMAN; Townland: TAWNYMUCKLAGH; Place Name: TAWNYMUCKLAGH

Publication Details: Page 18; Printing Date: 1858
Act: 15&16; Sheet Number 46; Map Reference: 12

A townland is an ancient Irish land measure of no particular size. It can be from a couple of acres to several hundred acres. The given name usually denotes a geographical feature nearby. For instance my local townland of Barraglan means 'the head or top of the glen'.
You can see Tawnymucklagh here: http://www.celtic-knot-creator.com/town ... ymucklagh/

Thousands of Irish place names were anglicised during the first geographical survey of Ireland. Tawnymucklagh is the anglicised version of the original Irish Thamhnaigh na Muclach. The first word means an 'arable place or field'. Na = of and Muclagh = swine or pigs.

http://www.rootsireland.ie/ has a hit for a Michael Giblin baptism with a father named Roger....
Church Baptism: Giblin, Michael - 1857 - Co. Roscommon.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the YoB differing from the estimated YoB in the census. It will cost 25 credits [5 Euro = abt £4.25] to see the full record. I feel it is worth looking at in view of the sole Griffiths entry for Roger Giblin and Kilcolman is actually in County Roscommon as is Boyle.

A baptism search with surname only with a father Roger, 1853 +/- 15 years gave these additional hits...
Church Baptism Giblin Brigid 1852 Co. Roscommon
Church Baptism Giblin Owen 1854 Co. Roscommon
Church Baptism Giblin Catherine 1859 Co. Roscommon
Church Baptism Giblin Roger 1864 Co. Roscommon
Church Baptism Giblin Alice 1866 Co. Roscommon

Thomas Sutton 25 Feb 1856 9 Mar 1856 St Mary's John Sutton, Jane Carr - Godparents Richard and Alice Louisa Peck
Patrick Sutton 10 Mar 1860 17 Mar 1860 St Mary's John Sutton, Jane Carr - Godparents Patrick and Mary Dogherty

She's fibbing somewhere, either on first marriage or in later censuses
St Nicholas Church, 23 July 1837 - gosh this must have been the first quarter of civil registration!
George Bellion Minor Bachelor Watch Case Polisher Sawney Pope Street Father Nick? Walter Bellion Watch Finisher
Jane Carr Full Spinster Sawney Pope Street, Father John Carr Cooper
He signed, she made her mark
Witnesses Henry Wilcock and Ellener Lea

There is a burial at St Mary's on 27 May 1842 for four month old George Bellion of Addison Street.
Not finding a death for the older George Bellion, mind you I don't see a death entry for baby George either.

I think his father's name was Uriah, in 1851 a 42 year oldl Uriah Bellion, Watchmaker born Liverpool, his wife Sarah 42 born Bath and son Uriah 8, born London were in Spon Street, Coventry.

No death for George .... no marriage for Jane?

Thanks, Mary.
The 2 George's Jnrs are new to me - neither appeared in the 1841
census.

I am assuming that George Bellion snr died in 1841 - he did not
appear in the 1841 census record [HO 107/557/3 page 18 (folio 13?)]
- is he sired the George Bellion (died May 1842, born abt Jan 1842).

There is a Mary Sutton: Possible birth details:
Name: Mary Sutton
Year of Registration: 1844
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
District: West Derby
County: Lancashire
Volume: 20
Page: 989
which agrees with the 1861 census details - but I have not yet found John
Sutton+Jane Sutton(ex Bellion, nee Carr) in the 1851 census.

Uriah Bellion:

Interesting, I had assumed this was the father Uriah:
1851 census
Civil Parish: Everton
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Registration District: West Derby
Sub-registration District: Everton
ED, institution, or vessel: 1g
Household Schedule Number: 55
Piece: 2189
Folio: 232
Page Number: 16
Uriah W Bellion, head, widow, aged 70, watch finisher (journeyman), b Liverpool
Mary Doyle 40
Christian Allexander 20
Ann Doyle 14
Elizabeth Benson 8
Mary E Benson 6
James Benson 20
James Doyle 27

He would have been born abt 1781 in this case, as I have
several other children of his born from abt 1800 onwards.
But I may be wrong. Uriah married a Sarah - who died in
March 1832 in Liverpool, according to another contact.

Two Uriah's similar occupation - maybe I have the grandfather
and you have the son? Although my Uriah had a son
Uriah born 24 Oct 1807 in Liverpool, supposedly.

As far as I am aware the Griffiths Valuation is almost the equivalent of a adult-occupier mini-census that took 16 years to complete. Unless you have indications to the contrary I would assume that the Roger Giblin I found in the 1858 publication is the only adult with that name in Ireland up to 1864. If another had been found and 'enumerated' up to 1864 he would have been listed in a later publication and would have been a hit in the search.

With regard to the completeness of old Irish parish records of baptisms, marriages and burials, it has to be assumed that some have been lost in the mists of time due to various factors and we will never have the satisfaction of knowing that all records are available, online or otherwise.

DS has given you excellent information there about the Giblin family back in Ireland. The RC parish according to Roots Ireland for all those children is Ballaghaderreen (also known as Castlemore and Kilcolman). This RC parish covers two counties; Roscommon and Sligo. As DS said Roots Ireland has the records for this parish with their County Roscommon records but the townland where the family were living according to Griffith's Valuation c1858 was Tawnymucklagh in County Sligo. This Townland is right on the border between Roscommon and Sligo and is on the Sligo side of the county border. So Griffith's Valuation is correct in saying that Roger Giblin was living in Tawnymucklagh, Kilcolman, County Sligo c1858. If you purchase the baptism for Michael Giblin it may identify the townland where the family were living at that time and confirm whether Michael Giblin was born in Sligo or Roscommon. The family appear to have stayed in the same parish but they may have moved to another townland on the Roscommon side of the county border at some time.

Re: Holy Cross area Catholics - Sutton, Joyce, Giblin, Corco

I assume these three facts were extracted from the findmypast website - will I learn anymore if I pay 5 credits for the transciptions?

or
Name: Bridget Giblin
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1821
Date of Registration: 1876
Death Age: 55
Registration district: Boyle
Volume: 9

Regarding the above BMD transcriptions, I believe they were taken from FamilySearch, but you will not learn anything else unless you purchase a photocopy of the relevant certificate from the Irish GRO at 4 Euro each [abt £3.25] http://www.groireland.ie/

At present you cannot pay online for Irish certs, but there is a box on each application form where you can tick to receive the photocopy by email. Usually takes about 7 days from submitting the form.

It should be noted that the information on death certs is minimal. You may learn the name of the informant and any relationship of the deceased to a spouse.

I have a Sarah Joyce in my Norah Prendergast tree. I think she is Norah' s aunty. Anne/Honora Joyce being Norah' s mother. They too lived in Arlington street. All baptized in Holy Cross. Would love to offer more but can't get into ancestry at mo. Will update when I can
