Foster/ Heraty Family Tree Advice - *Help Required*

Post by Foster88 »

Hi all,

I'm new to this website but I thought it's the best place to start asI'm trying to trace a particular ancestor of mine and I've hit a brick wall.

I'm trying to trace my great-grandmother who was married and liver in Liverpool, her name was Elizabeth Heraty or Herity as I've been told, she was born in Ireland and came to England some time before 1918. Her approximate date of birth would be 1898-1900 and thats as much as I know. She married my great-grandfather Joseph Foster b. 1898 in May/June 1918 according to records in Liverpool.

They had four children from 1919 up to 1931, Elizabeth Foster Nee Heraty died in the early 1930's when my grandad was a child and this is as much as I know.

They lived in Everton and according to what my grandad said one of the places they lived was a street called Ruth Street, where about's in Liverpool this is I'll never know. I'd like to know where she was born, where they lived in Liverpool and possibly where she is buried. I'm not sure how I would research passenger lists of immigrants into England or if any will exist, by my calculations she would have come to England any time from her birth up until her marriage in 1918.

If anyone is able to help I'd be more than grateful, I've been putting my family tree together for a number of years and other lines of my tree go back eight generations but my great-grandmother is a mystery.

Thank you in advance.

Dan

Elizabeth's age, 22, would give a birth, 1896
Joseph, 21, 1897.

My attempt at addresses on the marriage cert would be, Ewart Terrace, Emelia St, second opinions welcome.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

How lucky the RC marriage details have given the ages, they don't all do that, thanks for the cert Bert.

On the Liverpool History Projects site there are maps circa 1900, where I see Ewart Street (not Terrace but hopefully it would be nearby) http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co. ... laz/S6.htm

Unfortunately the boat trip between Ireland and England (often to Liverpool) was like a ferry and no records were kept. Have you talked to any older members of your family? could there be some family stories passed down as to where in Ireland she was born?

With the difficulty in finding Elizabeth Heraty and her parents in either the 1901 or 1911 Irish census, or there being an Irish birth for her that matches, it is possible it was her parents who were born in Ireland. FamilySearch has these...

Birth: Thomas Heraty
Birth Date: 30 Jul 1873
Birthplace: Mayo, Ireland
Father's Name: Peter Heraty
Mother's Name: Margaret McGreal

Birth: Thomas Heraty
Birth Date: 19 May 1866
Birthplace: WESTPORT, MAYO, IRELAND
Father's Name: Thadeus Heraty
Mother's Name: Julia Fargus

This couple had a child - Maria (Mary) Heraty born on 11th October 1898 and baptised at Holy Cross on 19th October 1898.

The baptism record also records her marriage, to Michael Joseph Foster on 30th April 1927 at St. Mary of the Angels, Fox Street.

I haven't been able to find the family on the 1901 Census to confirm whether there was another child, Elizabeth.

To confirm this Elizabeth's baptism was in St Francis Xavier's 1894 and notes the marriage to Joseph Johnson in I think St Mary of the Angels, 1919.

The families may be connected, two witnesses to this above marriage are Rosa Heraty and Thomas Heraty.

Karen's find - the same couple had another child Anna born 12 March 1897 baptised in Holy Cross 21 March, godparents Thomas Cullen and Louisa Herity. Ann married 1919 to Maurice? O'Neill in St Mary of the Angels.

Based on the order of the children - ie Elizabeth, Mary, then Ann, and also the dwelling (close location to the other family Heraty), could this be a possible family in 1901?

5 CARSON St, Everton - all born Liverpool
Thomas HENTY Head M 29 Ship's Fireman (Seas)
Ann Wife 27
Lizzie daur 5
Anne 4
Mary 2
Thomas son 5 months
RG13; Piece: 3482; Folio: 81; Page: 36

Bearing in mind that the original pages were re-written by an enumerator, an error could have been made reading Herity to Henty.

Another baptism at St Sylvester in 1903 for a Margaret, same parents, godmother Maria Cullen.

The absence of a marriage of a Thomas Henty to an Ann between 1890 and 1900 points to Henty being Heraty as MaryA suggested. And if this family is Heraty, then Thomas senior's age is a close match for the Mayo birth in 1873. Although the 1901 does indicate he was born in Liverpool. Can anyone find that 1895 marriage to Ann Cullen to confirm his father as Peter?

And ideally we could do with the occupation of Elizabeth's father from her 1918 marriage cert. Was he a mariner?

Sorry RC marriage registers don't show as much detail as CofE do, if it is necessary to know the occupations our poster will need to order the certificate from the GRO.

But the occupations of Thomas in both the 1901 and 1911 match, if that's any help.

Hi all,

Thank you for your replies. I'm glad I stumbled across this website now, up until now Elizabeth Heraty has been a bit of mystery.

I can confirm what one of the previous comments said, my granddad always spoke of Michael Foster his fathers brother marrying his mothers sister, his aunt. She also died quite young about the time my great grandmother (Elizabeth Heraty) did according to what I've been told, as far as I know they both died of TB. Apart from what I've said I don't have any further information, the last link to this side of my family was my granddad who we sadly lost in February this year and as he was the last surviving child of Elizabeth and Joseph there isn't anyone left to ask.

The marriage records do sit with the record I have of May/June 1918, my great grandfather was serving with the Machine Gun Corp in France at the time and presumably married whilst on leave. Is there any way I can l know for sure which family she belonged to with the different census records people have discussed?

Could anybody point me in the right direction to get a copy of the marriage cert?

Thanks again for all your help.

Dan
