Roskell family - Gateacre

Roskell family of Gateacre [Little Woolton] circa 1840 I am searching for any info on the Roskell family and in particular for Robert Butler Roskell who became the second RC bishop of Nottingham in 1853. His family have a stained glass window to their memory in St Mary's church Woolton.

You are quite right; the Nottingham Diocesan handbook gives the name "Richard Butler Roskell" as the second Catholic bishop of Nottingham. His family had strong connections with Woolton and St Marys notwithstanding the stained glass window I mentioned. Bishop Roskell returned to Woolton and Liverpool on several occasions in connection with the Benedictine presence in the city until his retirement.

The information also ties in with the current diocesan year book. Maybe I should have made the point that I am a native of Wooton although not having lived there for many years. In my 80s I am becalmed in Louth, Lincolnshire but with siblings in Liverpool. Many thanks for the cutting. Another interest is Belmont Abbey Hereford where my cousin, a former Benedictine Abbot for 16 years, lives in retirement. His mother and mine were cousins and so the Liverpool connection continues.

Have you seen the alleged portraits on Ancestry? I have no doubt they are also elsewhere on the internet also but didn't google.

There are also a number of public trees with him, they note his parents were Robert Roskell and Anne Kaye.

Haven't seen them but will have a look. Many thanks. Among other Woolton data I have come across the name "Jump-Roskell" on old headstone from St Benets old church in Watergate Lane. The headstones were moved to St Marys cemetery 25 years or so ago and I spotted name but at the time I was concerned with other names for friends in Australia. The "quiet little" village of my childhood appears to have been nothing of the sort.

Hi 1851 census he's in Manchester St George's District, 82 Ludell or Sudell St, 33 R.C Priest and Doctor of Divinity bn Gateacre with 2 curates and 3 servants.
There's an Augustus J born in Woolton, perhaps his nickname was "Jump"??

THanks for that information. I wonder why he would be in Manchester? Manchester is Salford Diocese now - 1851 is after "Catholic Emancipation" of 1837 but before "restoration of the Catholic hierarchy" so I supposethe future bishop could have been anywhere. References to Gateacre interest me; as recent as my schooldays in Woolton [1938 to 1949] Woolton was "Much Woolton" and Gateacre was "Little Woolton." Thanks again.

That fits as he is shown in the Nottingham Diocese yearbook as being consecrated Bishop by Cardinal Wiseman 21 September 1853.

1841 can't find him with the family who were living at Gateacre House Much Woolton.
Mum, Dad 4 sisters.
Location of house in 2 previous pages is Acrefield, then Eccles Hill, then Church Lane and Allerton Rd.
I'll ask my cuz Tommy about location as he is a map collector of Woolton/Garston/Speke.

Thanks for your efforts. I thought that the "boundary" between Much and Little Woolton was somewhere along Acrefield Road but that it was nearer to Gateacre Brow. The interesting thing is that the bikshop's father Robert was very much involved in the setting up of schools in Liverpool but Woolton in particular.

My Dad's family moved from Co Galway around 1903 - my Aunt Delia's first communion certificate [at St Francis' Garston] is dated Dec 1904. Her sister Mary's certificate [also at St Francis] is dated 1906 and that for my dad St Mary's Woolton 1909. The family lived at 13 Island Road in Garston and then in the "Catholic Courts" at the bottom of Mount Street, where it joins Quarry Street. They lived for a year or so on Quarry Street at the top of Pit Place before moving to Allerton Road where they lived until my Aunt Mary's death in January 1985. My interest in Roskells stems from my now living in Lincolnshire, part of the diocese of Nottingham and some research I did for an Australian friend whose ancestor [Hugh Bullen] lived at Hillside House Woolton [now demolished.] In looking for Hugh Bullen I found his connection with the Benedictine prior of St Benet's in Watergate Lane. Researching my mother's family in Liverpool I found they worshipped at Benedictine churches St Annes, Seel Street and others and eventually found a [living] cousin who is retired Benedictine Abbot of Belmont Abbey Hereford - his Mum and minebeing cousins. Now in my 80s I am trying to tie up loose ends before the inevitable and with Nottingham having lost our Bishop McMahon to Liverrpool and with speculation who will be our next one, the name Roskell came up again. I am a Keeley - there were 11 os us children, now 10. Definitely off topic.Thanks again.

I appreciate that this is an old thread but came across it whilst researching the life of the Roskell family of watchmakers. The father of Bishop Richard Roskell, Robert (m Ann Kaye 1808) was one of the world's foremost watchmakers from around 1798 up to his (apparent) retirement c1841. I would appreciate any information that anyone is willing to share with me about Robert Roskell (b1776 d1847) and his family. I know that he worked for most of his life from Church Street, Liverpool (various addresses).

I also know that his son Robert left Liverpool in 1843 to become a partner in a very high end jewellers, goldsmiths and silversmiths in London - Hunt & Roskell.

I was wondering if Gateacre House is still standing.
