Wire-drawing in St. Helens

Post by Fledge »

Was there a wire-drawing firm in St. Helens, around the late 1890s? :?

When I think of 'wire' I automatically think of Prescot. Forgive my ignorance - I don't know St. Helens very well.

There's a very bad ocr document I found when googling, if you can make sense of it, it could be interesting. http://www.google.com/patents/US698273

I don't know about St Helens, in 1938 Directory for Lpool there is a Wire Drawing Company, agents at
10 Dale St Bldgs Lpool 2. They are a company based in Birmingham.

Very interesting - although I can't pretend I understood most of it! :)

The name applying for the patent could be relevant - William John Glover. My family address is Glover Street. Good work, Mary. Could be a link.

Thanks, Tina. The whole family, father and sons, settled in St. Helens and were all employed as fine wire-drawers. To that end, I imagine they'd be working at a local firm.

William John Glover's postal address is given as St. Helen's Cableworks, Lancashire, in 1901.

Can't find anything more on him but I think that is the place I'm searching for. I think I might have to look at old OS detail.

I can't get the hang of the new Googlemaps at all  but I can see it's no distance at all from Glover Street - straight up the Ashton road.

Bert, fantastic.

Thanks everyone. Mystery solved.
