William Henry Hartley is Canadian or English can you help?

Post by marie131963 »

Hello
I wonder if some of you kind people could help me. I am trying to research my great grandfather and his family. William Henry Hartley.

I am a little confused I appear to have his baptism but then when I check the various censuses the first one seems to suggest William H Hartley was born in Canada, but every census I can find and his Marriage certificate say he was born in Liverpool, Lancs.

How can I confirm if he was born in Canada or Liverpool?

I can’t find a birth in Canada but then I am fairly new to doing research. I am not experienced in overseas records.

If he was born in Canada, Could he have joined a Canadian regiment in WW1 from here?

He Died in WW1 we don't know when for sure.

I am trying to find out where and when he died in WW1 overwhelmed by the amount of William Henry Hartley’s but did notice one who was killed in Salisbury plain that was a part of a Canadian regiment which is why I ask?

I am including what I already know so you can see where I am coming from.
Thank you for any help and consideration, I am sorry if I am being too cheeky feel free to put me in my place. I am only learning the ropes. Sorry I am so long winded.

Kind regards

Marie Rowan

Looking at the 1891 census page, it doesn't say Canada. It would mean each child was born in Canada and brought here for baptism, if Canada was correct. Could be a badly written Everton I suppose.

99% certain it is a poorly written Everton and Lancashire is dittoed down from above, so I would say certainly not Canada.

Good for you giving all that information, so many people provide so little it's like getting blood out of a stone ;)

Van driver/carter/porter all fit together as similar occupations.

I, too, think it looks like 'Everton.' The enumerator hasn't crossed the 't' - compare it to the 'Parliamentary Borough or Division' where he's done the same.

This would make this one the most likely birth:

Hartley William Henry W. Derby 8b 556 June Quarter

Hello, Bert, Karen, MaryA and everyone who read this.

Thank you so much for your help, Really quick as well, I am amazed. I now have some direction, I see now I might have misread the location and even implanted Canada , What am I like, and Everton would make sense. I will have to do a little more work but I can now carry on now where I was stuck and confused. So once again a Huge thank you.

I am glad I put the information even though it was a lot I can not ask for help without giving you information and your efforts showed the benefit so thanks.

Kind regards

Marie
