My first posting-West Derby Death 1907

Post by Matty50 »

Hi. This is my first post so please forgive me for any mistakes!

I am tracing my family tree and have finally found a relatives grave in Anfield after the help of a kind lady in Liverpool. The family originated from north Wales and this is where Elizabeth died. On the headstone with Elizabeth is her husband, John, who died in 1933 but there is also another person remembered, this turns put to be Johns brother Griffith Owen Edwards, who died 28 March 1907 in West Derby aged just 23. Is there any way of tracing how he died? Maybe newspapers obituary , reports etc.

I believe they have owned a shop in the Liverpool area, Elizabeth and John were married in Everton and in 1911 census living in Lansdeer Road Liverpool. Maybe Griffith was visiting them or living near at time of death but the inscription on headstone gives his home as North Wales.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The best way to find out is from the death certificate which you could order online at www.gro.gov.uk using the following reference
EDWARDS Griffith Owen 23 W. Derby 8b 373

There may be an entry in the local newspaper, either the Liverpool Mercury or Liverpool Echo at the time, unfortunately this date isn't available on the old newspapers site, although there is the possibility that Findmypast has this date if you have a few credits spare.

Hi Matty

Welcome to the forum. Some of us on here have access to 19th century newspapers unfortunately this date is several years out of our range of access so we can't look online for a newspaper mention. If you don't get to the Liverpool Record Office at some point or get a look-up you could always order the death certificate:-

Name: Griffith Owen Edwards
Estimated birth year: abt 1884
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1907
Age at Death: 23
Registration district: West Derby
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 8b
Page: 373

Many thanks for your replies. I do not have access to find my past, I use ancestry. Just thought it was worth trying to see if anyone out there had access to information.
Is it possible for me to make a personal visit to the record office ?
Regards

Didn't find a reference to the death of Griffith Edwards in the http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk [and Findmypast] newspapers collection. As MaryA suggested you should get his death certificate which should tell you the cause of death or if a coroner was involved.
