Jane Metcalfe b Anfield 1905

The majority of my grandmother's siblings moved to Liverpool in the late 1800s/early 1900's from Dent, W R Yorkshire (now Cumbria). I am seeking info on Jane Metcalfe b 1905, the daughter of William Metcalfe b1879 & his wife, Ann nee Nelson b 1879. Ann was my grandmother's oldest sister. They lived at 2 Vicar Road Anfield & kept a dairy. I have a feeling Jane may have married someone who was also called Metcalfe but can't find any record. Does anyone have any knowledge of this family please?

Other names in the Liverpool area being researched are Nelson, Chapman & Fawcett. All children of George & Jane Nelson of Dent.

Thanks in anticipation of any assistance.

Hi

Welcome to the forum. Did Jane stay in the Liverpool area and did she definitely get married?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Checking the marriages in the Liverpool area there are only two unless Jane moved out of Liverpool, one was in 1947 and the other in 1953, both of these have the surname spelled Metcalf.

I wonder if you have discovered that Jane had a child and the birth index notes the mother's maiden name being Metcalfe, this often means that the mother may not have been married.

From Kath:-

"Thanks for the very speedy response. I am not 100% certain about Jane but recall in the 1950's being taken to visit a Jane Metcalfe who my dad & aunt referred to as "cousin Jane" living at Bedale in N Yorkshire & married to someone called Tom who worked as a gardener at a big house. I have even looked at the graveyard at Bedale without any success. I have not found a marriage in Free BMD or Ancestry. I was really just hoping someone else might be researching the family & had some "insider info". Incidentally her mother, Ann Metcalfe is buried at Sedbergh cemetery with one of her unmarried daughters but none of the other family members."

Perhaps we have looked in the wrong place for a marriage, maybe Kath needs to look in Yorkshire instead.

Only two plain 'Jane' marriages to a Tom/Thomas in Yorkshire 1923 - 1935.

Jane Metcalfe married Thomas Middleton
Registration district: Reeth; Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1929; Quarter of registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 9D; Page no: 1036

Jane Metcalfe married Thomas Metcalfe
Registration district: Skipton; Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1935; Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Volume no: 9A; Page no: 57

And this is the only one in Lancashire...
Jane Metcalfe married Thomas Eastham
Registration district: Nelson, Lancashire
Year of registration: 1941; Quarter of registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8E; Page no: 707

Of the three marriages there is only one death that fits, provided that her birth was not registered until the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter after her birth in June 1905.
Death: METCALFE, Jane
Registration district: Northallerton, Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1992; Month of registration: May
Date of Birth: 14 June 1905
Volume no: 2; Page no: 1992; Reg no: 592

I'm guessing that you may already know that there was a Metcalf dairy on the corner of Lower Breck Road down from Scorton (( Morecambe where I lived 40s to 60s)) and Grange Streets. The family had dairy cows and were very well known in the area. As a child my job was to go and pay the milk bill... happy days when milk was delivered to your door. :)

Thank you to everyone who has responded. I have all the info from the censuses, thanks I am just stuck with the marriage. I do not believe that she had a child & it is possible the Skipton marriage is the one as my aunt always referred to her as "Jane Metcalfe" - as you all know, spelling of names can't be relied upon!

Daisycakes, thank you for your advice re the dairy, I know they had a dairy, as did my other Liverpool ancestors, Fawcett & Frances Nelson & Richard & Elizabeth Alice Fawcett, or were "cowkeepers", this is not too far from the family occupation as farmers. - We still get milk delivered to our door, so must consider ourselves lucky!

Thanks again everyone for your time & interest, much appreciated. At least it means that it's not just me who can't find a marriage in Liverpool!!

According to Google Maps, Bedale is only 8.3 miles from Northallerton where a Jane Metcalfe's death was registered in 1992.

Dickiesam has given you the details of the perfect sounding marriage, to a Thomas Metcalfe. If you ordered the marriage certificate from www.gro.gov.uk giving her father's name and her age as criteria, if this entry doesn't fit then they will refund your money.

Thank you all for your help, wow what a response! -I had not realised you could get a refund from GRO if the cert ordered wasn't the right one - might just do this!

The marriage cert I suggested, if correct, could provide a pointer to one of these Thomas Metcalfe deaths registered in the same district [1945 - 2005] as the Jane Metcalfe death I found earlier....

METCALFE, Thomas,- Yorkshire, Northallerton - 1990 September - DoB: 8 June 1907
METCALFE, Thomas - Yorkshire, Northallerton - 1997 August - DoB: 3 June 1908
METCALFE, Thomas - Yorkshire, Northallerton - 1997 November - DoB: 4 July 1907

There's only 8 listed in Yorkshire in 1910+1 with YoBs between 1905 and 1909! So his father's name should find him. Unless his name is Thomas as well!

Hi Kath. That GRO refund policy only applies where they are unable to find a registration that matches the information you specify in the application. If one gives the incorrect info and they find a match they will not issue a refund.
