Hi everyone.
Can anyone help me identify the parents of Elizabeth Laurinson (various spellings: Lawrenson, Lorinson etc) born about 1807, possibly in the Upholland area.

The story so far:
She married William Gordon at Christ Church, Hunter Street in 1827. Margaret Laurinson was a witness.
They had several children between 1829 and 1846, including John Martindale Gordon baptised 1846.
1841 census: family living in Welch Ct (Kitchen Street)
1851 census: family living in Grafton Street. Elizabeth is down as having come from Upholland.
1858: Elizabeth died at 13 Gomer Street (not sure where this was) aged 53. Her death was reported by Sarah Martindale of 2 Spencer St although Elizabeth's husband was still alive.

Sarah Martindale and her husband, William who was a stonemason, lived in 2 Spencer Street at the time of the 1841, 51 and 61 censuses. Upholland is given as the birth places for Sarah and William.
Sarah Laurinson married William Martindale in 1824 at St Nicholas's. The 1841 census has an 80 year old Margaret Larinson living with Sarah and William - seems too old to be Sarah's mother (Sarah's age is given as 30).

Now here is my problem. I thought Elizabeth and Sarah were probably sisters and that it would not be too difficult to find their parents but I cannot find any suitable Larinsons from Upholland.
An Elizabeth Laurinson was baptised at St Elphin's in 1807 (dates would sort of fit census and death records) and a Sarah was baptised there in 1814 - date seems at odds with her marriage record. John and Margaret Laurinson were parents of both children and 'abode' for both baptisms is given as 'Buttermarket' but John's profession is given as 'warehouseman' when Elizabeth is baptised and 'coachman' when Sarah is baptised so I don't feel I can square the circle.

Can anyone see something I'm not or advise me of other enquiries I can make? As always, any help would be much appreciated.

If you have checked Ancestry and Online Parish Clerks and the usual online sites for baptisms in Upholland, you may well be missing a lot of churches although not the usual run of the the mill C of E religions.

It appears from census information, Sarah's likely birth date was 1807/8, if she was rounded down in the 1841 census from 34 to 30 which seems to be the case according to her given age in the 51 and 61 census. If that is correct, Margaret Laurinson being 80 in 1841 could well be her mother.

Just to comment on points you have raised:

Mary: I hadn't looked at Genuki until my quick look 5 mins ago! Certainly, the nearby methodist churches might be worth a punt.

Bert: I see what you mean about the ages. When I last looked into this branch of the family I had assumed Margaret was the mother but then began to doubt myself this time round. I guess I was being influenced by the baptism and marriage dates of 1814 and 1824 respectively.

Dickie Sam: Thanks for the info re: Gomer streets. My ancestors certainly got around all the high spots of Liverpool! I don't think the Gomer Street area has come up in my previous research as none of the surrounding names are familiar. Do you know where it is in relation to Kitchen Street, Spencer Street etc?

As for the church record, I hadn't looked at this on Ancestry until now as I had looked at the microfiche copies at the Library back in 2009. What I hadn't noticed then was that William Martindale is a witness at the following 3 marriages, which occured the same day as his own wedding! The other common witness was an Edward Coventry.
Do you think this suggests William had something to do with the church or did he just like weddings?!

If Spencer Street is the one in the Anfield/Everton area and Kitchen Street is in Toxteth then it would indeed seem that they moved about quite a bit, perhaps a moonlight flit? wouldn't be uncommon. Using a modern day map, eg googlemaps, enter Stafford Street being the area of Gomer Street and still there now, and you can plot a route from the other two streets and see the distances.

As for William being a witness at other marriages, I would check other dates before you consider he was connected to the church, if he only witnesses those on the same day he was there then he could have just been usefully on the spot.

William Maddox and Elizabeth (nee Laurinson) lived in the Kitchen Street area and Sarah Martindale (nee Laurinson) lived in Spencer Street.

Following your comments, Mary, I'll get to Preston and start looking at those Lancashire records and see if that new line of enquiry gets me any further.
