I have been researching William Wrigley born 1825/6 who married Mary Caddick in St Philips on 24/9/1844. His age is given as full and his father is John Wrigley, a painter.

I believe he married a second time on 30/3/1875 in St Johns, Liverpool. A widower, his age is 50, supporting the 1825 DoB, however, his father is William, a labourer.

Is there a logical explanation for the different fathers on the MC or have I made an incorrect assumption?

Are you sure the second marriage is the correct one?
There is a marriage for a William Wrigley to a Mary Bennett on 13 Feb 1876 at St Timothy, Everton. He is a widower, a painter, father John a painter.
He is living at 35 Haigh St.
Mary is a widow, 6 St Georges Terrace, Plumpton St

Ages are given as full

Erika has given the most likely second marriage.

If the marriage on the 30/3/1875 with Mary Rice is the one that concerns you, William could sign at the marriage with Mary Caddick, the Mary Rice marriage, that William had to leave his mark.

Your suggestion of Mary Bennet is supported by the 1881 census where William is married to Mary and has two sons, Charles & George Bennett Wrigley.

Thanks for pointing out the mark versus signature, William would not have become illiterate with age.
