Sick infant passenger- Christmas 1899 Please help me find

Hello- I'm new to this forum. I have been hoping to find the cemetery/cause of death of my grandmother's baby sister for 30 years. I had so much genealogy to do that I could never pay a prof researcher. But I knew a shipboard death should have been noted by captain on manifest AND listed on BT 158 (passenger deaths at sea). Baby Anna Ficks is not noted as dying on first manifest (Rhynland Dec 14 1899- my GM and family crossed off like 22 other passengers) nor is she on on Deaths at Sea according to Records Office. Three weeks after getting off the Rhynland- just my GM Bertha 'Foks' and her mother Mary (Ficks) left on the Belgenland Jan 4 for Philadelphia, Pennsylavania. I am wondering why baby Anna is also not on nonconformist/foreigner deaths in Liverpool for Dec 1899/Jan 1900? Either she died on the ship (necessitating 2 possible death recordings) OR she died in Liverpool after the 3 of them got off ship (requiring at least the Liverpool death recording & presumbaly a burial record). My only hope is that they spent the 3 week wait at Brownlow Workhouse/Infirmary and the baby died there (resulting in 3 possible records- Admission to show they were there, death of a family member, and discharge list for remaining 2 members). My GM Bertha was actually 4-5 years old and remembers traveling over Christmas from Germany to US and insisted they got off a ship and buried her baby sister in the ground. Am I on the right track? I have seen other German passengers sent to Brownlow and the burial often at Anfield. Thanks for any help. I want to acknowledge my great aunt Anna- so sad my great grandmother was 22 and alone when her child died in a foreign country over Christmas.

The three names on the outward bound journey in December 1899 are crossed out so they probably bought tickets but never boarded. There doesn't appear to be a death registration if the child had died in an institution that provided medical care you would expect the officials to ensure there was a death certificate. Perhaps the child died in lodgings. No sign of the child in Toxteth or Ford Cemeteries the Friends of Anfield Cemetery may be able to help or otherwise you could pay Liverpool City Council to do a search:-

Bert- I only recently was able to see the actual manifests of SS Rhynland (and discovered her name was Anna- great info just finding that!) and the SS Belganland manifest with no further info (clearly she was deceased when my GM and her mother got on Jan 4 1900).
These immigrants grossly distorted children's ages- that's why Bertha is listed as 2 years old (we know she was at least 4). I have very specific memories younger than that- and this was pretty traumatic.

I am hoping to find the family/Anna's death on the workhouse Admission & Discharge Register which is at a FHC about an hour from here (have never ordered microfiche before). That may just be wishful thinking since I know of no where else to search for burial record at this time.

*Any other ideas about where they may have stayed for 3 weeks in Liverpool OR the most likely cemeteries to search? I am surprised there is no info online (that I can find) about what cemetery the shipping lines used for passenger burials. This would be American Line out of Philadelphia (formerly the ship was owned by Red Star)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

One of the main burial places for those who died in the Workhouse is Walton Parochial Cemetery, these are available on Ancestry, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to find an entry relating to Anna.

Emigrants from continental Europe would have arrived by boat on the east coast of England. A lot of emigrants arrived at Hull and then got the train to Liverpool.

I have thought about that as well Blue. But my GM Bertha's recollection was prob. enhanced by info from her mother. She must have been told the baby died in the city of Liverpool. No story came down thru my great-GM of them having been elsewhere in England by rail- but I'm not discounting that possibility. The story passed down was that the girl died coming INTO Liverpool by ship- but who knows.

However- IF my great aunt Anna died on an incoming feeder ship to Kingston upon Hull or another eastern port- why would they miss their ship Rhynland in the following day/days? My great-grandmother would have been desperate to get to her husband in the US and wouldn't want to spend 3 weeks in a foreign city over Christmas. I think its likely she was delayed due to seeking medical care for, or burying the little girl. Sad that the death wasn't recorded anywhere in England unless its on the workhouse register or a cemetery list.

The Irish came into Liverpool by boat Ireland being to the west of Liverpool but most continental Europeans came by train from the east. Coincidently there was a repeat showing of a British TV show called "Coast" earlier today that showed a group of Americans visiting Hull and retracing the steps of their emigrant ancestors who arrived at Hull and then got the train to Liverpool where they got the ship from Liverpool to America. I can't see a birth reg anywhere for this child, in fact no 'Ticks' or 'Sicks' at all in birth index so could there have been some confusion with name at workhouse when registering death, reading writing etc? so should it be Ficks.

In the event of no corresponding birth reg in Liverpool for this child, it looks to me like this is possibly your Annie, they had to bury her on 30/12/1899 and left on 4/1/1900, how difficult that must have been for them

To confirm Simone's find of a possible death, a wildcard search of Liverpool, West Derby and Toxteth for Annie *icks and Annie *cks, produced the same single hit....

Simone, could you post the image for me? So does this now mean I can pay for a death record at LRO and there will be more verifying info- like mother Mary and Russia-Poland emigrant? I suppose it's definitely worth renting that LDS/FHC microfiche of the workhouse register.
