Thank you all
thought I would explain my mixed up searching as I did find out a lot 2 years ago, my father was born George Cain Dec 27 1921 poorhouse isle of man birth cert says Catherine Cain domestic Douglas no fathers name and baby was registered by the person who was in charge of the poor house, we cannot find any thing about George until 1927 where the family crennel applied for guardian money in which they were granted and on that form was written mother Australia ,[ up to finding that bit of info we thought Catherine was manx born person and the Catherine Cain I had for him was one born 1899 to john and jane but there is no trace of her after 1911, my friends who had ancestry accounts had come up with one Catherine Cain going to Australia and she was the one born in Liverpool 1901 to Bernard & Bridget on her passenger listings it says she is a clerk , Have I been barking up the wrong tree with this family , she [ Catherine ] is the only one that seems to fit but question is where was my father George from Dec 27 1921 to the day when crennel family asked for payment 1927, Do I need to start from scratch again ,,

I suggest you should try the poorhouse records. Your father may well have been fostered out as a 'nurse-child' to a caring family, possibly the Crennels. The local parish council would usually pay a small sum towards the child's upkeep. Quite a common practice. It seems a coincidence that the Crennel family's request for a 'guardian payment' is in the same year that formal adoptions became legal in the UK.

I think you're on the right track Maggie. My great grandfather had an older sister who had a number of children out of wedlock in the Isle of Man. Her illegitimate children are strangely absent from the 1891 census but appear in later census years with a foster family or in service. Two possible scenarios:-
1) Catherine went to work as a domestic servant in the hotels in Douglas
2) Catherine went as a servant of a family who went to live over there

Sometimes it's interesting to count back one of my Liverpool-Irish ancestors was born 9 months after St Patrick's Day. Counting back here takes us back to Easter:-
