Help finding Angelbeck family in Liverpool

I'm hoping someone can help with my family research.

My ancestor Laura Shacklady(b1868) married Edward Augustus Angelbeck(b1867) in Liverpool in 1890.

I can find the family and their children on all censuses after that.

I have found Lauras burial in 1914 but can't find any trace of Edward Augustus Angelbeck or his children after 1911. She leaves her estate to Edward Augustus Angelbeck in 1914 so he's still alive by then.

The children he had with Laura are:

George Henry Angelbeck (b1892)
Laura Angelbeck (b1895)
Frederick Ernest Angelbeck (b1897)
Edward James Angelbeck (b1898) - i think he might have been buried in Suffolk, 1977, but can't find any reference to his siblings anywhere.

Am I missing something here? Hopefully someone with a bit more experience can help me out. I would like to know what happened to them.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The death in Suffolk does match for age doesn't it, so it's possibly him and linking Suffolk I wonder if Laura married later in the life or whether Edward had a daughter, as there is a marriage in the same registration district, Sudbury, Suffolk Apr-May-Jun 1952 4b 2010 for a Laura E. I think this would be worth an investigation.

Also an Edward J Angelbeck married in the same year, same place Jul-Aug-Sep 1952 4b 2647.

The Laura that was married in 1952 isn't my Laura as the 1952 Laura was born in Farnham in 1920.

The Edward you mention marrying in 1952 was born in Sudbury in 1924 so again isn't one of the people i'm looking for.

This is a peculiar one isn't it!

My only guess is that the following may have left the country.

The surname sounds a bit German. It's really confusing me - i hate not getting to the bottom of things

Hello Dan,
Edward Angelbeck's parents were German-born. The family may well have changed their name in the run-up to WW1 due to anti-German sentiment. Many businesses in Liverpool that had Germanic names suffered at the hands of rioters.

ANGELBECK, John Son 2 1869 - Liverpool.

There are also the possibilities that the family changed their name between 1911 and 1914 or that the children may have been classed as Aliens despite being born in Liverpool.

And it would be worth checking if the parents became naturalised British citizens at some stage.

I did look at some of the passenger lists without success, but I find it strange that with the ages of George and Frederick, there is no mention of them in the military lists either, so I wonder if it is possible that there is a German connection and they changed their name because of it.

There are some passenger lists I am unable to access with my subscription but did you know that you can use the World version of Ancestry at your local library, for free, and there may be more entries in it.

Also check the National Archives site, there are Angelbecks from Germany who became Naturalised, not the same names as yours unfortunately, but they may lead to clues. There is mention of an Archibald in the Kings Liverpool Regiment, so possibly lived in Liverpool also.

Edward Angelbeck (b1867) was a grocer in 1914 (stated in his wifes will). Perhaps they did change their name.

If I find out where his wife (Laura Angelbeck nee Shacklady) is buried in Liverpool I might be able to see others who are buried in the same grave. Might give some clues.

There might be alternative spellings of Angelbeck.

I'll keep everyone posted if i find any more info.

We've cracked it!

Just found Edward Augustus Angelbeck in the Liverpool Echo, 1915 changed his name to Russell!

Two names very coincidental, reckon they are worth investigating.

Probate Calendar 1957
Russell Edward Augustus of 34 Pilkington Avenue, Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire, died 12 March 1957. Probate London 24 May to Frederick Ernest Russell butcher and Gladys Farryan (wife of Walter John Farryan) Effects £4389 3s 2d.

There is a death for a George Henry Russell (b 1891) in the Braintree district of Essex June 1976, too late to be able to check for probate.

That's My Edward Augustus Russell. He died aged 90 in 1957, so born 1867 which is correct.

So all the family must have changed their names to russell. I'll do some digging and see if they were involved in the Military. His son, Edward James who ended up in sudbury never changed his surname, he was also an M.B.E!

On the 1891 census, the Angelbeck family lived at 5 Russell Street. Could this be the reason why they changed their name to Russell?
