hi, I wonder if you could direct me to best place to look for records for the merchant navy during the second world war out of Liverpool. I cant seem to find any records of my grandfather Joseph Thomas Henry born 1911, I know the names of two of the ships he sailed on-The Empress of Scotland and the Empire Plover, but still cant come up with any records.

Hi. If you go on the national Archives, and search for SHIP MOVEMENT CARDS. You will be able to type in the name of the ship, you can then download them, I think it is £3.60 per page. I found the movements of the ship my father sailed on during the war. It will give you the places they visited along with the dates

You can type in a ship's name, such as Empire Plover, on this site and get a list of possible archives of material elating to that vessel. http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalpha.php

The records you need to access are BT/382 1939-1945. These are not available online. These are CRS 10 cards

cards and they record all vessels that the seaman served on. You will not be able to access these yourself because of Data Protection issues. The staff will however get the information for you but they will blank out information that breaks Data Protection (what is that?) all my information is available on Ancestry, 192.com etc etc) They will require Name, Date of birth, where born in order to identify the correct seaman. I suggest you either e.mail or phone with your research inquiry and they will be able to advise you of how to access these records.
