Borrowed from tree on Anc,
Liverpool Mercury. Monday, June 1, 1857
A PILOT DROWNED – On Saturday week, Mr. William Sayle, 30 years of age, who resided in Hunter – Street, proceeded on a cruise off the port in No. 5 pilot boat. On Wednesday last, whilst returning to the vessel in the punt after putting a pilot on board the William Penn, Waterford steam packet, aline was thrown and made fast to the punt. Owing to the speed of the boat through the water, the punt was drawn under her quarter, and the deceased and two apprentices were immersed in the vessel’s wake. The deceased, it is stated, sank immediately : his comrades were picked up by the crew of the steamer. He has left a widow and four children.

Also a visit to the Maritime Archives at the Albert Dock is a must. They may have more on Liverpool's Pilot Service.
