I would be very interested to hear from anyone with the surnames Waters, Waterland, Carr, Carrington and Bramhill (and variants) who have had the 36-marker Y-DNA test. I had mine done about four years ago, and there were matches with Waters, Carr and Carrington surnames (as well as Bramhills) in the US.

It is possible that Bramhills and Carringtons are related from about 1400. It is notable that the manors of Bramhall and Carrington are just a few miles apart, so we may be talking about brothers who went their separate ways, to work on different estates, just as surnames came in to fashion.

Some Carringtons and Bramhills went out to the West Indies in the early to mid 1700s. The Waters connection may date from then, when various children were born "the wrong side of the blanket".

We may be able to test this theory if any members of the Waters family in the UK have had their DNA taken. If there's no match with the Bramhills/Carringtons it will help to point towards extramarital hanky-panky in the Caribbean. If there is a match it means that the connection between the families goes back further than thought, or, as a Waters, your family have been to the Windies and returned.

I've tested with both Ancestry and FTDNA, and my results should come up there if they are a match with yours.

Regards

Will
