Hi all, I've not come across this one before, what does the Ad annotation mean?

Thanks Bert, that list suggests adopted.
Adoption had occurred to me but I was confused by the fact that one child has parents listed and the other doesn't. I wonder whether Mary Hickey was her adopted name (in which case why no parents names?) or was that her birthname and she was waiting for parents? Can anyone shed any light onto 20 Prescot St, was she living with her parents or in an institution?

Not really of any help, but in the 1901 census there appears to be a family living at that address, 80 year old Mary Bretland and her daughters, music teachers, son in law, Henry Henshaw, a plumber and a few grandchildren. So I don't think it was an institution, unless the family (or perhaps the previous occupants) took in pregnant youngsters perhaps?
