Hi,

My G-grandmother (Annie Corrin) was born in the Isle of Man, whose records aren't great. She married in 1905 in Liverpool and I have her on the 1911 census in Bootle. I *think* I have found her on the 1901 in the Salvation Army on Marmaduke St, classed as 'inmate' but domestic servant under occupation. I noticed that on the whole page she was on, they were all female, apart from a male baby.

I can't find anything about a SA on Marmaduke St, only a congregational church. Does anyone know anything about the place, and if her being there could shed some light on her very dim past? She was only about 16 so I'm wondering if this could be a sign that she was orphaned? (I'm also drawing blanks on her father Thomas Corrin post-1871 IoM census and don't even know the name of her mother!)

I saw that entry today I think, but semi-disregarded it since Sarah was listed as a mariner's wife. Thomas was a Mason (according to Annie's marriage cert). It's a possibility though!

In 1901 Annie is an inmate of The Salvation Army Home Of Refuge in Marmaduke Street, West Derby.
RG13 - Piece: 3495 - Folio: 17 - Page: 25

These establishments provided shelter for the poor, destitute, homeless and other unfortunates. There were Refuges for men as well as for women. It would appear that Annie was there because circumstances and/or misfortune had deprived her of a home or the roof over her head.

An unusual birthplace is an important point and somehow, although you don't say how, you seem to have discovered this for Thomas. Before dismissing them, I would be very inclined to look very much more carefully into the 1891 family that Blue has found due to this major coincidence.

Annie was born IoM according to 1911 (and 1901) census. I have her father's name and occupation from her marriage cert. I found Thomas Corrin, son of William Corrin (Mason) on 1871 IoM census.

Corrin is a very common surname on IoM so I'm not sure the coincidence is that marked. I now have names of Thomas's wife and children, but thanks for your input.

Difficult one this! I wonder whether there's been a change from the birth name at some point. There's an Ethel Corrin aged 17 born in Douglas IOM with the family in 1911 recorded as being a visitor I wonder whether this was a sister of Annie? I can't find any birth/baptism/census records for Annie or Ethel.

I noticed a witness at the marriage called Thomas Bibly or Bibley was a stone mason so maybe there's a clue there. Here's the marriage for anyone without access:-

Yes, they're the right ones. If you look at the thread on rootschat that Mary posted, someone has found lots of info.

Thomas Bibby and Hannah were witnesses for Richard and Annie, who straight after their own wedding were witnesses for Thomas and Hannah! On the census though, I recall Thomas being listed as a Seaman though, not a mason. I don't think I saw his occupation on the marriage cert...

That find on Rootschat is from Family Search isn't it? Not sure about the dates of birth they're a bit out for Annie and Ethel but it's a possible match.

Yes, that's her. I'd noticed the age discrepancy but have read that it's not uncommon for women to only loosely remember their year of birth, often taking years off themselves lol.

Also there's the fact that on the birth info she's Emily Annie and elsewhere Annie Emily. I suppose that could be because she was known as Annie to avoid confusion in the family and it stuck that way round with her?

I saw Hannah's marriage to Thomas Bibby that other one I found (the stone mason) must have been a coincidence.

Do we have census records for that family showing Thomas Henry was a mason? It's odd to me if it is right that there's a few things that don't fit ie the birth dates don't match, Annie Emily is Emily, Ethel is Ethel M and Thomas is Thomas Henry.

There's a Thomas Corrin, stone mason, on a number of censuses but he's a single man. Here in 1881 he is recorded as Thomas W. Corrin:-

The parents of this Thomas William Corrin were Thomas Corrin also a mason and Ellen/Ellin/Ellinor Kermode. Here are some baptisms the first one down as Cowin in error:-
