What may have happened to them?

I've just received a death cert for my great aunt, hence the question about the hospital.

She died in 1917 age 34, her husband also died in 1917 KIA in France.
They had 5 children living ranging in age from 12 to 3.

Her sister registered the death, hence the Kearsley Street enquiry. She is on the 19schhh census but only has 3 rooms, so maybe unlikely she was able to take in the children.

Where would they have gone to? Their previous address was a pub in Edgware Street where my great uncle was the licensee before he went to war.
One of their daughters died in 1921 age 14 at the Children's Rest, Greenbank Lane, but I think that was for sick children. There was a faint rumour that she went looking for her siblings and subsequently her condition worsened and she died.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on this one.
Thank you

Hi Erika, a sad story.
The home was next door to the Rathbone family who, as you know, where philanthropic people in Liverpool.
In 1938 it was a school for invalid & crippled children.
1911 again in the Rathbone estate Greenbank Lane, Greenbank School/Boarding.

I imagine one of these scenarios was what happened to them

1. They were taken into an orphanage

2. They were taken in by relatives

3. They were taken in by friends

To try and find out what happened to them long term could you post their names, years of birth and religion.

Also the parents' names etc.

Hi Hilary

Thanks for your reply.
I had a feeling it may be an orphanage, not sure the relatives would have had the room for 5 children.

I do know that 4 of them survived their childhood and went on to marry and have families.
However it was what happened to them after their parents died that bothered me, where they went, it must have been so traumatic losing both parents within months of each other.
I have no contact with any living relatives there might be.
Would there be children's homes/orphanges records to view at LRO when it re-opens?
I am compiling my very long list for when I eventually get to Liverpool  :D

They are my Campbell family,
William b. 1905 d. 1944
Elsie b.1907 d. 1921 ( Greenbank )
Laura b.1910 d. 1999
Henry b. 1912 d. 2003
Jessie b. 1914 d. 1996
There was another child George b. 1916 d.1916
They were C of E as far as I know
Parents Henry and Laura (nee Robotham)

Thank you :D

If it was me I'd search for living relatives. They are the ones most likely to tell you what happened. The youngest children would possibly have no recollection of their parents. There were many homes/orphanages in the area and with no idea which one it would be like searching for a needle in a housestack. Also some records may be under 100 year closure notices.

Did the children marry in the area or elsewhere? If they married in the area it may be easier to find names of their children and then see if you can find them.

Hi Erika,

I agree with Hilary, a good course would be to find living relatives. I see you have the dates of death but do you know if any of the 3 surviving children married? Would 7th September 1912 be Henry's DoB? If yes, who registered his birth.

Hi DS

Yes that was Henry's birth and his mother Laura registered it.

All the children married and at least three of them had children, but haven't been able to trace them so far.
William left a will but it didn't help :(
I'll keep on searching.
This is all because I still haven't found my great grandfather's death, Henry's father, which I have posted here before and had lots of help but no result :(

I would get the death certificate of one of the children to see who registered it. Hopefully it'll be one of their children.

I'm a wee bit confused which one's your grandfather that you haven't a death certiciate for? Could you link to the previous posts please?

Hi Erika
Some of your family are listed in Genes ReUnited.
If you are not a member I'm happy to make enquiries with the posters.
Cheers

Sorry still confused! Do you mean Henry KIA married to Laura or Henry died 2003? If you mean Henry KIA is he not on the CWGC site? If you do mean him then presumably one of the children was your grandparent so did they not talk about their childhood?

Can you list the known marriages with dates and any known/confirmed children or PM them if you prefer. Save making guesses...

Hilary this was my thread originally, but it isn't really relevant to this thread now, but just gives all the names.

Henry KIA was my great uncle. His father was the great grandfather Lachlan Campbell who's death I haven't found yet.

DS will send a pm.

I'd get Henry's death certificate as he died the most recently and hope one of his children registered the death. If you have a probate office anywhere near you could go and look up to see if he left a will which might be helpful.

I'm very happy as I've made contact with a 2nd cousin :D
She is the grandaughter of Henry Campbell ( 1884-1917 ), my grandfather's brother.
Her mother was one of the orphans, sadly now deceased, but another 2nd cousin remembers his father talking about the orphanage they were sent to, which was Myrtle Street, photo above.
Will the NEW Record Office have records for this orphanage?

She has filled me in with quite a lot of details, a few relatives went to Australia.
However she knew nothing about the Campbell family, didn't know there were brothers of her grandfather. Unfortunately still no news regarding my gt grandfathers death, she didn't even know gt grandparents names, so I've really ignited her interest in the family :D Just hoping these other cousins may remember odd things their parents talked about. Of Henry's surviving children, some had children themselves and this new 2nd cousin of mine seems to have contact with them.

Anyway quite a positive outcome.
Incidentally she said that Laura Campbell who died in 1917 was buried at Toxteth Park Cemetery although we can't find a record. Are the records on their website complete?

Very Happy :D

Lovely that you made contact with relations, I hope you find out more stories. I can't answer your question about records held, had a look in the catalogue but I don't find it very conducive to searches, perhaps somebody will know.

I think that photograph came from here where there is also the picture of the Boys Orphanage you might want to note for your files.

I think there are records for Myrtle Street. You will have to get in touch with Roger as he will be the only one to access them because of the 100 year rule. Keep whittling away they always pop up!!!
