My great uncle Patrick Hennessy born 15/5/1882 in Co. Laois (Queens County) Ireland and registered in Mountmellick was in Liverpool 1898/9 where he was godfather to his eldest sister's child Bertrand Grayson baptised in St Anne's Overbury Street. He is possibly the same Patrick Hennessy in the 1901 census living in Byford St, Kensington aged 18 a drapers assistant. I was told he worked for some time at Lewis's department store as a shop walker( I think this is like our security) and wondered if there would be records anywhere of staff working there early part of the 1900s?
I live in Corfu now but will be in Liverpool for a few days early June if there is anywhere I can look.
Many thanks.
Lewis's staff records
Re: Lewis's staff records
Hi and welcome to the forum.
If the staff records have been deposited anywhere it will be the Liverpool Record Office, however it is closed until mid May while they relocate back into the Library after refurbishment.
See this link, you can also use the Contact links to ask if they hold the records you are interested in.

Re: Lewis's staff records
Thanks Mary I thought that would be the most likely place. I will contact them and if they have anything I'll go in when I'm back for a few days in June.
Re: Lewis's staff records
The recent history of Lewis's in Liverpool is sad, and can be read via Google. Its last owners were an outfit called Vergo, who acquired Lewis's along with numerous other retail stores and groups.
On 7 May 2010 Vergo was placed into administration, with MCR appointed as the administrators.
MCR, whoever they are, might be worth approaching, though with countless companies' records to handle, they might have shredded the lot! I do hope not.

Re: Lewis's staff records
Maria, it's now in your hands to contact MCR and if they still have the records and are wondering what to do with them, please suggest that they be lodged with the Record Office.
And let us know what results you get.

Re: Lewis's staff records
It looks like MCR have been bought by Duff and Phelps. I have contacted them to see if they have the personnel records so will wait for their reply. I have suggested that if they do have them they might deposit them with the Records office.
Re: Lewis's staff records
Fingers crossed, at least that way they would be publicly available, depending on the date of course.
