Finding a grave - Mary Jane Marsh 1913
Hi, can anyone help!!. I have been trying to find the grave of my Great-grandmother for sometime now without much luck, it took me a long time to atcually find her death, she died on the 23rd of July 1913 in Borough Hospital. Her address at the time of death was 59 Livingstone-road Rock Ferry, she died as a result of injuries sustained in a motor accident at the corner of New Chester-Road and St Pauls Road. Her name was Mary Jane Marsh and she was aged 44 when she died. Her husband is Buried with his second wife in Whiston. I have tried several records office etc but no-one seems to have a burial record, any help would be fantastic, thanks in advance.

Re: Finding a grave
Hello, welcome to the forum.
Your best chance is to look for a local newspaper in case a death notice was published. Details of funerals often include the burial.

Re: Finding a grave
Hi Marshy77 and welcome,
Do you happen to know what religion Mary Jane was, perhaps from her marriage cert? If she was RC it would rule out a cremation and perhaps point to a possible graveyard.
If you live in or near Birkenhead it would be worth spending an hour or two at Birkenhead Library browsing the newspapers from the date of the accident up to and shortly after her death.

Re: Finding a grave
Thankyou dickiesam, unfortunately it doesn't state her religion on the marriage certi, the church the marriage took place was st Paul Warrington so maybe a good idea to check that church out, hadnt thought of that until you said
. Also im in Cornwall so no where near Liverpool, i did manage to visit a couple of times last year but hadnt found her death then. I have the inquest story for her death but the lady from the library coudlnt find any other notice's. Thankyou for your reply.

Re: Finding a grave
You are welcome Marshy.
I was thinking that maybe Mary J Marsh could be buried at Warrington St Paul's, the church has a graveyard. The records for there are at Cheshire Records Office.
http://archive.cheshire.gov.uk/CalmView ... 100&pos=12
I had a look on Warrington council website, there are some burials listed on there, but none came up for Mary Jane Marsh in 1913.

Re: Finding a grave - Mary Jane Marsh 1913
After the replies i recieved to my original post i contacted Cheshire Archives and this was the reply... We do hold transcript of church memorials for St Elphins Warrington. It is in 3 sections. Section A- memorials still surviving. Section B- memorial inscriptions inside the church. Section C- memorials recorded by Warrington Borough Council in 1960.
The introduction to the transcript indicates that there was graveyard clearance scheme in 1960. I have checked the index but could not find any reference to Mary Jane Marsh.
I have checked our parish list but could only find a graveyard plan but no registers.
So my search still goes on
I have contacted Warrington Library and await a response from them.
Im asuming a graveyard clearance scheme is a polite way of saying the headstones have been removed and the grave used again? I dont think this could be the case for Mary though as in 1960 she would have been buried for 47 years and surley that is too soon to be used again.
Any other ideas!!!

Re: Finding a grave - Mary Jane Marsh 1913
Has the graveyard been landscaped? Turned into a garden area? Has any of the land been built on? What makes you think the graves are being re-used for new burials?

Re: Finding a grave - Mary Jane Marsh 1913
It was just a thought because of the reply from Cheshire Archives, as above. The graveyard clearance scheme in 1960, not sure what this means. I dont know anything about the church until i am able to visit.

Re: Finding a grave - Mary Jane Marsh 1913
Why don't you contact St Elphin's church and ask them?
A graveyard clearance could just mean that an area of older graves has been turned into an open space with the gravestones placed around the edges. Before the church can do such a thing they have to go through a number of procedures.
I would check the local paper to see if you can find mention of the funeral and that will give, hoepfully, where she was buried.

Thankyou Hilary, i am awaiting a reply from St Elphins church and Warringtron Library.
Re: Finding a grave - Mary Jane Marsh 1913
Back to the drawing board, St Elphin's does not hold the records they were passed over to Cheshire record's office and i had no luck there either. So i am thinking i may need to hire a little professional help now to search for a death notice which may help me find this elusive grave.
If anyone is able to recommend someone who provides this service or has any other suggestions i would be most grateful.
