Could anybody please tell me if the Railway Hotel Waterloo is still there please? I have looked at Goole maps and there is a pub on Brighton Road called ''the Railway" but I am not sure if that is the one I am looking for. The hotel I am looking for was trading in 1867. I have a Death Certificate that states my gt gt gt gt gt grandfather died in this hotel after being hit by a train!

Any help would be gratefully received as I am going up to Liverpool next month and if the hotel is still there would like to visit it. Thank you atticus

It is quite clearly on maps.google.co.uk at 5 Brighton Road (corner of Hyde Road), Waterloo, L22 5NG.

I suspect it has been rebuilt over the years.

It seems likely that that would be the Railway Hotel it's very near Waterloo Station. You could give them a ring and ask when they were built or try Sefton Local History at Crosby Library 051 257 6401 and ask then if they know when it was built. You can see the Railway at 5 Brighton Road on Google Maps.

Apparently the land that paralleled Brighton Road was the goods yard and before that Waterloo Station was there. So it does seem very likely. The properties look late Victorian so it may well as Mary says been rebuilt. I'm in Crosby Library on Friday doing the Family History Help desk there so will see what they have to say there then.

Was your x5 gt grandfather William Halsall of Bute Street Liverpool, died May 1867 aged 77? There is a report in the Liverpool Mercury about the accident, the inquest was held at the pub in question so I would say Yes it is the same pub near the railway station in Waterloo.

Hi Thank you for your help. I saw the Railway Pub but thought it looked a bit modern in architecture. probably rebauilt ! Yes my gt many times grandfather was William Halsall, really sad end to a life . I got the death certificate today and it all fits really well. If you do not mind asking in the library that would be great. I think whilst I am up there I will have a look around the area anyway.

The pub is listed in the 1860 directory, Henry Ward Railway Hotel Hyde Road Waterloo, I also found in the Liverpool Mercury 1858, that the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway workers held their Christmas party there, it only listed Mr Ward's Railway Hotel Waterloo. So I think the pub has been there for quite some time!
