Through someone who is researching a family name that I am distantly related to, it seems that one of my Great-Aunts was married twice to the same person. In 1902 Eleanor Lambert married James Burke, then in 1903 she married James Dwerryhouse. James was born Dwerryhouse but was known by his mother's married name of Burke. I haven't got the certificates but would they have had to notify the registrar/vicar that they were already married and would the second certificate have been notated to indicate the first marriage. As it's not part of my research, I do not want to send for the certs but has anyone come across this before. Regards Moya

There is a tree on Anc which has James Dwerryhouse b 1877 d 1948
Eleanor Lambert bn 1882 d 1964 Bootle.
James mother listed as Elizabeth Dwerryhouse, died Bootle, no other info.
1911 James as Dwerryhouse 34 Tanners labr bn Kirkdale.
Eleanor 29 bn Everton 1882 and the kiddies.
39 Staley St Orrell Bootle.

Have a look at 1881 where James is 4, Ellen is 60 and John is 18 all Dwerryhouse.
They are boarding with Burke family in Bootle.
Elizabeth Burke wife is 22.
Free BMD have his birth as Dwerryhouse 1877.

I think you would need sight of the church marriage register to solve this. However this is not available online so it would need someone to look at it at Liverpool Record Office.

They should actually be the same, the information being given and completed at the same time, but we have seen occasions when the information has differed.

John from 1881 is in 1901 census bn 1863 Blackburn, married.
and again in 1911 both times living in Bootle.

As they were both at the same church , it is possible that the vicar knew the couple and was aware of the reason behind the second marriage. Any annotations he would have made are likely to be in the copy of the register kept by the church rather than the register that was held by the register office. The church register is the register the couple would actually sign. The one we see copies from the GRO etc does not have the couples' actual signature.

I think the John Dwerryhouse on the 1881 census would have been Elizabeth's (Burke) brother. Both of the marriage's took place at St.Mary's Kirkdale so I shall let the person who is researching this know that if he wants to take it further he should check the LRO or the church. He lives in Manchester so this not be too much of a problem. Thankyou all for your help and suggestions. Regards Moya
