George McDonald/Catherine Connell

Hi,

I am trying to help my mother in law, to find out about her British relatives. Her Grandmother was from Liverpool, and was the daughter of the person I refer to as Joshua#3. If anybody can help me, that would be great!

George is the uncle of "my" Joshua (#3). I long thought that he was the father, but I now realise that isn't so.

George's family in 1871:

RG10 - Piece: 3772 - Folio: 41 - Page: 37
Address: 5 House, 6 Court, Lower Milk Street, Liverpool.

MACDONALD, George - Head - 32 - Labourer - Ireland
MACDONALD, Catherine - Wife - 24 - Ireland
MACDONALD, Anna - Dtr - 5 - Lancashire
MACDONALD, Joshua - Son - 3 mths - Lancashire

and in 1881:

RG11 - Piece: 3594 - Folio: 78 - Page: 44
Address: 1 House, 17 Court, Penrhyn [?] Street, Liverpool.

MC DONALD, George - Lodger - Head - Widower - 50 - Dock Lab - Ireland.
MC DONALD, Ann - Dtr - 15 - Liverpool.
MC DONALD, Joshua - Son - 11 - Scholar - Liverpool.
MC DONALD, George - Son - 4 - Scholar - Liverpool.

- What happens to these people after 1881?

Thanks
Geir

Does anyone have any idea as what could have happened to George and his family? They are not in the census in 1891.

Thanks
Geir

Hi Geir, I'm not sure if I found Joshua in your original post, however, he is 20 in 1891 blacksmith married to Sarah.
By 1901 he's 30 in Albert Terrace, Birkenhead, Sarah 30, Sarah A jr 10, John 9, Lizzie 4 all bn Lpool.
Ann/Anna probably married. Not sure what happened to little George.

Hi,

I know it is a bit confusing. At first I thought that that was the same Joshua that was son of George, but it isn't. If you have a look at my other posts "Joshua2, Sarah McDonald" and "McDonald (Joshua), you might get the picture.

In short: the Joshua married to Sarah Widders that you find in 1891 and 1901 is not the son of George, but the son of his brother Joshua. So I wonder what happens to George and his son Joshua (and his siblings) after 1881?

Thanks
Geir

It is a bit confusing, and I was really confused for a while.

The Joshua McDonald you found (married to Sarah Widders), is the son of Joshua McDonald (I refer to him as Joshua#2), who is the younger brother of George.

For a long time, I thought the one you found and who is the son of George was the same person (since I couldn't find Joshua#3 - the one married to Sarah Widders in the 1881 census).

But I know now that they are not the same person, so I wonder where George (who is a widower in 1881) goes with his family?

Thanks
Geir

Hi Geir
So we are looking for George bn Ireland after 1881?
His age is 32 in 1871 and you have him as 50 in 1881 which is as transcribed.
A tree in Ancestry has him as 42??
Cheers

Hi,

If you found a tree on Ancestry, that might be an old tree of mine (or my mother in law) - this has some faults to it.

Anyway. I belive he was born abt. 1839 in Dublin as a son of Joshua McDonald and Hannah McDonald.

He becomes a widower about 1880. His age in the 1881 census must be wrong (that is far off the one on his marriage certificate and the 1871 census).

He must be leaving Liverpool (and I would think the country) between 1881 and 1891.

If it would be possible to find that, a lot of this puzzle is solved.

Thanks a lot
Geir
