Both Arnold and Ann appear in the census returns for 1851, 61 and 71. Ann is recorded as Bithell. By 1871 they have a sizeable family.
I have Morts in my family as well. Frank Mort married Sarah Leyland in 1890. Frank was born in Wigan in 1868. Maybe there's a connection?
I'm sure someone will come up with info on the chapel.
Barbara

Independent chapels often had some link with Presbyterianism, others with Unitarianism.

hi barbara
i will look again on 1851 census as i've missed it, by 1871 ann had died and arnold re-married racheal houghton (nee atherton) in 1867. arnold had another 6 children. so with so many children there could be a connection. look at web sites below, these may help.
https://sites.google.com/site/mortfamilies/
and
www.mortfamily.net
any clues from anyone on how i can find arnold mort's birth in tyldesley in 1830, poss non-conformist would be appreciated, thanks.
good luck

hi mary and dickiesam
thanks for the info, i will double check everything,
the arnold mort's birth's is still a mystery, i have a marriage cert (at independent chapel) stating his father was James and census returns stating he was born in tyldesley approx 1830. thanks for your help tho. also think some mort's were 'non-conformists'
all interesting and poss' related as arnold's early occupation was a weaver. there are literally hundred's of morts in the leigh and surrounding area.
cheers
carol

You may be interested to know that there is a Mort family history website http://www.mortfamily.net.
The Mort family was quite a famous family in the Tyldesley area and had a house known as Dam House which
is still open to the public.

Also just to clarify what Hilary has already explained - Independents turned into Congregationalist and now United Reformed churches. Any religion that is not Church of England i.e., the Established Church are known as Non-Conformists. Non-conformists is an 'overall' description of anyone not attending the Church of England.

They may have had to get married in the Church of England if the non-conformist church was not licensed for marriages. Alternatively if the non-conformist church was licensed for marriages they may not have had their own registers so a local Registrar from the Register Office would have attended the marriage and registered it in his/her own register which would be classed as a 'Registrar attended' marriage on indexes such as www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

hi glenys
thanks for the info, i have been on the tour of dam house which was interesting and would make a good trip for the group if you have not already been. and the mort family web site is also a good help, also google 'mort families of lancashire bring up some interesting info. thanks for the non-conformist info some things i did not know there so that was very helpful. do you know if leigh library has non-conformist parish records pre 1837. i am looking for arnold mort birth 1830 and his father james mort birth/marriage/death. i have arnold's marriage cert 1851 which says his father james was a weaver and he is NOT recorded as deceased. As the "mort's" are a big family in the tyldesley area do you know if anyone at the leigh group has mort's in their family tree? any help greatly appreciated and i will see you at the next leigh meeting on 20/11.
thanks everyone
carol

Hello Carol,
Please forgive me if you've already been to the Leigh Group meeting and I've not put a face to your name. When you come in November please make a point of introducing yourself to me.

As I explained only Church of England registers are known as 'parish registers'. Some non-conformists did have their own registers and may be at Leigh Library. When you come to the meeting, we'll consult the Group's first project which is the Leigh Register Guide which lists all the churches in the area and explains where there Registers are. If you can't wait until then, you can always ring or email Hannah Turner at Leigh Library and she'll explain which church registers she has for the time you are looking at.
