The building will be open for booked tours on this weekend. Our Society (Southport Group) will be there each day as will a number of other local family and history groups.

Smedley Hydro

Trafalgar Road, Birkdale, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 2HH

The General Register Office for England and Wales is celebrating the 175th anniversary of civil registration during 2012. Over the years since those early days of the service, civil registration has become a trusted and secure way of holding data across England and Wales, both centrally and locally. The register office has become a recognised part of our national life, whilst the fact that GRO now holds over 260 million records has greatly enhanced the process of searching for family histories and backgrounds. Smedley Hydro is a former Boy's College, Hydropathic Spa, Hotel and now is the home of the General Register Office for England and Wales (part of the Identity & Passport Service). There will be tours of the grounded floor of the building and exhibition in our ballroom.

Opening Times
Saturday 8th September: 1000-1500
Sunday 9th September: 1000-1500

Booking Details

The tours must be booked in advance as places are limited. Please be aware that we will be unable to accommodate any visitors wishing to attend without a confirmed booking. Please email gro.communications@ips.gsi.gov.uk to request a booking form.

This clashes with the Big History Weekend at St George's, hope some of our members will be able to spend a day at each.

The Smedley Hydro has limited numbers and work to a time scale so people are probably there only a couple of hours at most or less.
