Coroners Reports

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to get a coroners report. My Grandma died after a fall in Westminster House in 1954 and as a consequence there was a post mortem and a coroners report. Are these reports available to the public?

It appears that records under 75 years old are closed to the general public. Close relations may be able to obtain permission to view more recent records from the Coroner's Office.

Hi,

I think the Westminster house (formerly Kirkdale Homes) records are closed for 75 years, but the coroners records at Liverpool Records Office are open to the public.

I thought the index to the inquest registers were just the very basic information not the full record. My link mentions that those records are not subject to the 75 year rule. Roy probably best to contact the Liverpool Record Office and explain what you want to view.

Hi,
I got a quick response back from L.R.O. and they do hold coroners records but I have to write to the coroner's court for permission to view them at the following address:

Liverpool
L1 1JJ

Thanks Roy so the information I had was right. Just to clarify things you can view the index to the inquest registers on microfiche at the record office but this is just the very basic information. To view the full report of an inquest that comes under the 75 year rule you need to obtain the permission of the coroner's court. Good luck Roy.

Hi Jan and Blue,

Just to keep you up to speed on my Coroner's Report posting, the Coroner's office have responded to my request to view my Grandma's report and they have replied that because of the re-organisation and refurbishment of the Liverpool Records Office, Coroners reports are only visited every couple of months and there has been one recently, they did however ask me for a copy of the death certificate and promised they would make the report available for me after their next visit. I have forwarded the death certificate so I just await them 'digging out' the report on their next visit which I assume will now take a couple of months. Will let you know if anything transpires,

As promised on 6th August 2012 here is a feed back from my query on Coroners Reports. The records office have at last sent me a copy of my Grandma's Coroners report along with signed statements from her Daughter (my Aunt) and from the manager at Westminster House where she was a resident. It seems she was sitting in a chair next to her bed and despite being told not to try and get up from the chair and move around herself she decided she would and as a result had a fall. She fell backwards onto her head causing a nasty cut which bled quite badly but seemed o.k otherwise at that point. She was put into bed and the doctor was called but sadly she passed away before the Doctor arrived. Cutting through the medical terminology and legal wording in the report, basically she died of bleeding to the brain aged 76.
One thing I was a little surprised about was the Coroners Report was dated thre same day as she died so it seems they did the autoposy the sane day that she died!

May be worth looking in the local paper Roy to see if the inquest was reported worth a shot.

That was a long wait but you got the information you were looking for in the end. That was a quick write-up I thought it would have taken longer than that. My Dad's half brother died in Wales in 2001 and the death was registered by the Coroner four months later!
