I wonder if anyone can tell me who lived at 2, Westbourne Road, Southport in 1923? It's given as the address for someone returning from overseas.
Thanks in advance
Barbara

I think that would depend on anybody visiting the Crosby Library to check the Electoral Registers. At present I believe that anybody who might are actually on holiday, don't know if you are likely to get another response until later.

Thanks Mary, there's no rush - more curiosity on my part than anything else.

Hi Tina
There were three passengers all returning to the same address:
Edward Challinor born 1865
Annie Elizabeth Challinor, his wife, born 1866
Kathleen Challinor, his daughter, born 1898.
Edward was a shipping agent and a frequent traveller. The family returned to England in 1921 aboard the Empress of France and I found them again in 1925. Both times they gave the address in Southport. It could be they were going home?
Any help is much appreciated
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Edward Challinor and his wife are listed 7 times in the outgoing passenger lists between 1922 and 1930. He is a director of a cotton company. One trip, in 1929, was apparently cancelled.
For the first 5 trips, 1922 to 1928, their address in the UK was 12 Westbourne Road, Birkdale. On the last 2 manifests, 1929 and 1930, it is Meriden, 3 Staveley Road, Eastbourne. On the earlier trips they were accompanied by their daughter Kathleen.
If you would like details from the manifests I'll PM them to you.

Found another 7 trips for just 'E' Challinor leaving the UK from about 1902. Sometimes accompanied by Mrs A Challinor. Among them is what appears to be their final trip, a Mediterranean cruise in 1931, home address 3 Stavely Road, Eastbourne.

'Piano dealer, own account' is what it definitely says. So shortly after 1901 he went into the cotton import business, a wise and wily move back then. Was he out of the country with his family in the next census?

Blimey, I turn my back for half a day and shazzam! Thank you very much DS and Tina for all the info. What a well travelled family. Kathleen must have stopped when she married in 1925. It seems as if Annie Elizabeth's family may have been based in Southport hence the address. Maybe the Challinors retired to Eastbourne - very genteel. Obviously made a respectable living. I'd like to say I've found the rich relations but they're on my husband's side and by marriage at that. Oh well...
Ps Thanks for the offer of manifests, DS but I think they'd only make me jealous!
