Help needed - HUGHES brothers who were in the Navy
Posted: 12 Jul 2012 14:33
Hi,
I'm stuck trying to find any service records or such for some of my husband's ancestors. A summary of the family is: Joseph Hughes married Annie Smith in Derby in 1879. They had 9 children (born between 1880 and 1894) Frank, Nellie, Joseph, Harry (i would assume Harold), Albert Frederick, Charles, Thomas, Sally and Katey (who died as a baby). Joseph and Annie travelled with their work (3 of the children being born in Edinburgh) and ended up separating. The children were fostered with relatives or put into cottage homes.
I am trying to find information on Albert Frederick Hughes who left the cottage homes in Fazakerley in 1902 (aged approx 14) and joined the navy as a boy seaman. He went to Ireland on board the HMS Black Prince and following leave at Christmas 1902 returned to serve on the HMS Boscawen Portland.
Also Joseph Hughes (born in Sheffield in 1883) who joined the Royal Marine Artillery as a stocker 2nd class in July 1903. He was living in Manchester at the time with his Aunt Jane and left from Victoria Station bound for Devonport. He served in the Navy for 42 years.
Any help with information or just where to look would be greatly appreciated.
