Don't seem to have my brain in gear this evening. At least not for the past hour. I may have found the adult of a little lost/abandoned child who was unfortunate enough to be born to apparently very uncaring parents. His father was my paternal gran's brother.

From Katie... Note in records of Liverpool Workhouse:
28 July 1898: Joseph Fry aged 5 years, found in Mill Lane. Discharged 14 Oct 1898 to Kirkdale Industrial Schools.

Note in Kirkdale Industrial School records:
Discharged 10 Nov 1903 to Olive Mount Cottage Homes.
[but could be Fazackerly Cottage Homes, tba]

He wasn't in the 1911, wasn't listed as an outgoing passenger and was too young to be soldiering. It then struck me this evening that like my foster brother who had been in an orphanage, he may have joined the MN. Got a hit and a photo!
But is it him? There are only a couple of quite old photos of his sister to compare. The story continues....

I was looking for someone on the census the other day and found one with a birth place as 'Found in ditch'... but looks like she was at least taken in the lady who found her

Have you found any evidence that he might have been blind or handicapped in some way ? Olive Mount was a home/school more for children with special needs, perhaps the reason for abandonment.

In 1901 there is nothing listed in the far column about a disability, there again none of the inmates have anything either. They are all pauper inmates, God love them.

Olive Mount took over of what was Kirkdale Industrial School. Cant be sure when but it was after 1900 came across this when I was looking through the Board of Minutes.

With luck my Joseph made it through, and did join the MN as a boy. If the MN record is him, and I am fairly sure it is because there are 3 record cards all for the same man whose DoB is different on each card but the year and place is the same.. 1894 in Liverpool. In the circumstances it is unlikely Joseph knew precisely when he was born. He became a cook on board tankers, then cargo ships and eventually a chef on the Corinthian. He was finally discharged in the 1940s, the last digit is unreadable. His local 'Social Welfare' office was noted as Stepney, London.

That fits with a death:
FRY, Joseph
Registration district: Poplar, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1967 / Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 72
Volume no: 5D; Page no: 569.

I have details of a marriage that looks like it is him, kindly provided by SKP here. Any chance of finding the actual image on Ancestry for occupations?

Year/qtr of registration: 1918 / Apr-May-Jun
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 656

YoBs: Fry = 1894 and Lowe = 1897.
Fathers: Thomas Fry and Charles John Lowe.
Marriage place: St Mary's, Wavertree.

Not on OLPC either - the marriage records don't start until much later.Sorry not to have been more help.

The curiosity got to me! I have just blown me pension on that 1918 marriage cert!

Got his 1918 marriage cert today. He married Martha Elizabeth Lowe in St Mary's, Wavertree, June 22nd 1918.
Occupation, not MN but Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. Father Thomas Fry [deceased]. The real clincher for me...? One of his witnesses was Robert James Froom BA, Superintendent Cottage Homes and marriage conducted by Richard Wilson Jones, Chaplain of the Cottage Homes.

Katie thought that he had been transferred from Kirkdale in 1903 to either Olive Mount or Fazackerly Cottage Homes. He must have kept in close contact with the homes and had a great relationship there to have the chaplain do the honours and the 'Super' be a witness.

As you can imagine I am almost hopping in my chair with delight that the poor child did make it through the very hard parentless years!

Now off to RN records... If I can find them...

My thanks to everyone who participated in the search for the children of Thomas and Elizabeth Fry and especially Joseph who had almost become an obsession with me.

great stuff Brian like you say, so good he came through it all he obviously did well for himself regardless you must feel very proud of him
